Precision calibrated thermometers I've used in a laboratory setting always have an 'immersion point' over which it's not recommended to immerse them. I suppose that has something to do with glass thermal conduction, mercury vaporization (as you mentioned), and probably some other factors. I agree that it's sad they are being used less- especially for non-scientific mercury panic.

I heard the main issue with mercury thermometer was when they changed temp too quickly. The example I heard was someone had a thermometer outside in the winter and head to measure something boiling and the sudden change in temp caused the mercury to shoot up the thermometer so fast that it broke the glass.
