Sprengel Vacuum Pump

In this video I build and use a vacuum pump powered by liquid mercury. more about the pump: https://www.chemistryworld.com/opinion/classic-kit-sprengel-pump/1014874.article Applied Science video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r7NEI_C9Yh0 more 18th century technology using liquid mercury: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ms7x9bSlbcU Help me make videos by donating here: https://www.patreon.com/CodysLab

Working with the glass looks so interesting! Just need to locate some tubing that can handle extreme pressure so I can try some experiments myself... Regardless it's awesome that you're reviving old technology and using it successfully. Keep it up!

Great video - some of your best work I would say!

Could you use a electromagnetic pump to move the mercury back up?

Is there any way to measure so small pressures easily?

Agreed that this is one of your top experiments. I'm really interested in that electrostatic charge that built up. If you do this again, can you use a volt meter to measure it? Sorry about your shock! Ack that went across your heart!!

Is it possible to make a Kelvins Thunderstorm with mercury? You just proved that the mercury can build up a charge, and I just recently watched Veritasiums' video on Kelvins Thunderstorm.

both cryo pumps and ion implantation pumps are relatively easy to build the physical or roughing pumps pull to about 10-4 torr. your mercury pump should get to 10-5 or 6 torr with cryo and ion implantation 10 to -7 or 8 torr good luck. and i will try to get a couple of pounds of pc pins to you for the wedding ring gold sorry about taking so long a lot is going on always enjoy your video keep up the good work.more mining could be fun maybe a ball mill built from a large truck brake drum?
