Now we're just waiting on his half life H.E.V suit

Paint can also increase the lifespan of plastic items, by blocking UV. And for the automatic switchover, perhaps a "Mini Timer Time Delay Relay" and a DPDT relay?

Anonymous

Is it solvents in the paint that are a concern for weakening the plastic? Is that even a worry with a water-based latex?

what about using brush-less dc motors, like the ones used by drones, you'll need to fabricate an enclosure, but they pretty much run on Li-pos and can be throttled, you could also play with the pitch and shape of the blade to change the airflow and noise profile

Was going to comment the same thing; Cody if you want to experiment with drone motors I have several I’d send you to experiment with.

Hey, I'm a new Patreon. Love from Germany

@Cody -- You should check out Brushless DC Blower cooling fans. They're designed for continuous use and quite efficient (think of the many thousands installed in data centers). Many have PWM speed control and they come in a variety of flow and pressure ranges. Some are even optimized for minimal noise. So figure out your CFM & PSI needs then start checking out blower data sheets. https://www.digikey.com/en/products/filter/dc-brushless-fans-bldc/217?s=N4IgjCBcoOwJwAYqgMZQGYEMA2BnApgDQgD2UA2iAMwBMCALDTCMbQ1QGwsj0z0dUkrOvSoBWbm1EAOEAF1iABwAuUEAGVlAJwCWAOwDmIAL6mgA Also you might also be able to hook up a heated O2 sensor (automotive) and have an arduino in the pack automatically throttle the blower(s) based on measured O2 levels (and user feedback). Post a video about plans and I'll kick in an extra $100 through Patreon for some parts. If you need help with software / firmware for the arduino, I'm sure a shout out to your community would find people willing to help.

Oh and a Star Wars stormtrooper helmet form factor might turn fewer heads at WalMart.

I got a C pap blower surplus that uses brush less DC blower that is 2 stage for better pressure. I have been meaning to get it hooked up. If it works, I will let you know. That is designed for breathing air and meant to be quiet. I will let you know.

I suggest a raspberry pi and associated fun gadgets. When I played the video earlier, my wife pointed out you look just like my nephew, the resemblance is striking. He's not as motivated, curious or clever as you, lol.

I second the brushless DC blower fans. I believe they're quieter and Digikey let's you sort by CFM and static pressure which is great. Plus, they seem pretty affordable. Then you can add a cheapo 12v PWM motor speed controller for negligible power loss and variable speed.

Hey Cody, I am an electronics engineer of some 25 years. If you ever need and advice or gadgets making then please let me know. I would be delighted to help you out on a project!

Brushless DC might be good but easiest would be just to get PWM DC motor speed controller. You already got suitable pump. It would be just a few bucks on aliexpress. Also, efficiency of it would be close to 100%.

Anonymous

Here is one just for example. I dont think it would be hard to find it locally. https://www.aliexpress.com/item/4000122354738.html It's hard to see, but i assume your pump is 12v. Amps looks single digit.

Arduino will solve your control the timing problems. Also, why not use activated carbon as a filter?

Hey Cody, it's good to see you iterate on this project. I dig the redundancy setup with those simple check valves. For future iterations it might be worth checking out the blower setup Thought Emporium worked on for his positive pressure respirator as it's quite simple/compact and can use off the shelf 3M/North filters for the air intake: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jKjYEmbpFSw It's open-source, too, and the one designer he worked on it with even sells kits to just get the 3d printed parts if you don't have easy access to a 3d printer: https://github.com/thethoughtemporium/PAPR He uses a USB battery bank to power it with a micro-usb connector then a voltage booster. But you could potentially use one that supports USB C Power Delivery and be able to change the voltage (5/9/15/20 V) to vary the speed of the fans without needing a resistive load or PWM.

You just know the people who named it an Eva suit had repressed trans tendencies. Otherwise they'd have called it an Adam suit. /stupid joke

A way you could help protect yourself and others would be to have a negative pressure system blowing air out through a filter in addition to a positive pressure system drawing air in through a filter. DC Brushless motors are the way to go. You can get something off the shelf out of a fan or vacuum, but another idea would be to get them from a hobby shop where they use them on R/C cars or "drones".

Hey Cody, Did you say "a quantum magic"? Have you considered using a microcontroller (like an Arduino) to control the switching between the 2 blowers. They are easy to learn and use. A microcontroller could also control the blower speed, that your dimmer switch does now. Also, it looks like a 3D Printer would be very helpful in the construction of your backpack air delivery system. Example: where you have the copper plated steel wool holding off the filter from the intake. Instead of tying it off you easily design/print something to do the same thing, better, easier and more reliable. Also, I own a few 3D Printers and I'm offering to help you by printing what you need for your Eva suit, Chicken Hole Base or ??? Love watching your videos, Darren in NV
