i have a microwave glass melting kiln, i donated to my favorite hackerspace (Quelab), it was a insulative pot with a little graphite foil and then a insulative base, you put it on a kiln sheet and microwave it, the graphite conducts and heats the chamber and starts to get the glass ionic, and then the two work together to melt coe 7 or so glass in about 10 minutes, and serves as a annealing insulator too.

You say that the lime is to make the glass insoluble in water. It would be interesting to make some lime-less glass and actually try dissolving it in water.

And then I could use the sodium silicate solution to bond sand!
