wood chips were a bad idea

I admit to a mistake with the hydroponic system; I figure its better to get this information out sooner than later. Also I talk about the rocket in a vacuum thing. Help me make videos by donating here: https://www.patreon.com/CodysLab

OH NOES! gin is nasty.

Goldfish would be fine in a pH of 6.5 (you have to adjust slowly if they're in something different though). I think tannic Acid is not really a problem for goldfish but juniper is toxic to pond fish so still not good. What was that rhodent eating at the end? Looked like a banana chip lol cute

Oh well, stuff like that happens. Good on you to update us too.

I wondered what happened with the mice you caught - thought you might have tossed them out further from the mine but I guess you have some new pets now... lol...

I'd recommend using something like the filter sock (the one on your inside tank) on the pipe flowing into your outdoor pond to kick start your cycle. The bacteria that breaks down the ammonia and nitrites grow on solid surfaces and are almost nonexistent in the water column.

Glad you figured it out before you made more or killed your fishes.

Please tell me you have a countermeasure to mosquitoes, that pond is going to become a breeding ground! Cute cave mouse 🐭

pH 6.5 is perfect for Amazon basin fish - indeed many people add "blackwater tonic" to their aquariums to try to reproduce the pH and tannins you have now!

Mosquitoes wont be a problem once the goldfish are in there.

Logan Landscape has bulk pea gravel. Last time I bought a 5 gallon bucket I think they charged me $1.00. Looking forward to updates on the hydroponics system. I think covering the pipe with the wood chips is a good idea.

Vermiculite can be bought as insulation fairly inexpensively. My local big box construction store has 3 cubic foot bags for $15. A dollar per bucket is significantly more than the wood chips, but it is nice and light when it's dry, and is slightly less expensive than they ask for gravel.

do you need to get rid of the wood though? if you replace the water, would that not work?

Cody, I suggest using lava rock instead of gravel. It has a far greater surface area for bacteria to grow on.
