It's not about damaging the grass--it's about damaging the dandelions. When cut, they send up more and shorter stems--which gives them an advantage the next time the mower comes around, as they are less likely to be beheaded before they go to seed.

Could you use some sort of siphon? That would leave the buckets entirely whole., and be pretty cheap.

Please, please have your soil tested for lead before you eat potatoes grown so close to the road. I don't know how long contamination from leaded gas is retained in the soil, but it's best to check.

Okay, that cable management in that computer burns my eyes also I'm really interested in what the specs of your new computer are! For the buckets, I think the siliconde idea is good, if it sticks to them. Maybe just drill a hole in the bucket and the undergroundtube, which is barely wide enough, put some adhesive on the connecting tubes and ram them into the holes. I guess that would work just fine.

If you get straw, get it from an organic farm? Why? Glyphosate a.k.a RoundUp. It's a broad leaf plant killer, and straw from a non-organic farm may be full of it. You might get some ideas from watching Jack Spirko's stuff with aquaponics. https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLpHUZsnFSzdLauvHotc2z-NO2mZOcZvMf

For bucket drains, why not drill and insert a brass nipple/barb and connect to flexible drip tube? Then have those feed into central drain with another (plastic?) barb.

Do weeds grow back quicker the more you cut them? Like hair sometimes: when you shave more and harder hairs grows back after. Kind of like small scale evolution, only the fittest survive. I bet the dandelions on his side are more resistant
