Gold plating onto stainless steel isn't all the strong of a bond. Fortunately, I guess for measuring cups, that doesn't matter so much. For best results, do copper-plating, then nickle plating, then the gold. If you electroplate the copper and make it nice and thick; you can get a smooth shiny surface without all that boring polishing stuff.
