Hi Silver Cow Patrons,

We've got a special Concept Art posting for you today! Because for the first time, we're bringing our awesome Patrons an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at the making of the original Time Window laboratory, as featured in the first Time Tenshi game!

In this posting, we've included the original annotated sketches that served as the concept art for the two main backgrounds we initially created. This is the first time these sketches have ever been seen outside of our offices!

Our vision for this lab was a complex, impressive and slightly mysterious area that would serve as the backdrop for the many missions of the Time Tenshi. So because it's such an important location, the appearance was really important to us!

So we commissioned our artist to produce these pieces, and our description was along the following lines:

  • a large, round platform with steps around its perimeter
  • lots of tubes and wires leading away from the platform and into other parts of the machine (you may remember these were tidied away by the team in Time Tenshi 2)
  • a chrome furnace-type machine plated with white linoleum
  • a row of computer screens on the back wall, with shelves and control panels underneath
  • and finally, a generator somewhere in the room.

That's quite a lot to fit into a single background, and what's more, we also asked the artist for a close-up view of just the Time Window itself! But as you can see from the concept art here, we think the artist did an excellent job of bringing everything together in a really convincing way!

We hope you guys agree that the final version of the Time Window fits with our initial plan! We're definitely happy with how it turned out, and we love the sense of atmosphere it lends to every scene where it's featured!

Thanks for joining us in this special Concept Art posting guys, and come back soon for more news and updates!

Thanks as always for your support,

- Silver Cow Studio

Sometimes a design is made flexible originally. Aesthetically, you have a notion of what you want to have, and go from there. Not everything needs to have an explanation. In the way of artwork, video game locations and so on, it's a pretty tall order to ask, commission or hire someone to "create a fully functional secret laboratory that can do thus." Like, "please artist, learn every in and out of biochemistry, electrical engineering, temporal physics and so on just for a picture, please!" Heh heh. Sorry Armstrong, it's just that your comment, light and fluffy as it is, reminded me of some of the comments I hear picking at various movies and video games. As an creator of various media myself, I get to snickering whenever I hear someone stepping into someone else's world and then becoming baffled by the fact that these other imaginary world's aren't completely made of stone yet. Sometimes you design something not to have a function, or give answers but merely there to give the audience something to talk about should they wish to do so. Sometimes it's there with something in mind, sometimes it's there to be something for you to go back to and expand upon in a sequel or other return to the environment.
