Now that there are plot lines for Malcom to get in touch with his feminine side: the only logical choice is there are story-lines where a companion goes through the reverse. Where so many potential plot beats. and character interactions: who better to help someone cope with/confront someone who's losing a core aspect of their identity than someone who's own change mirrors their own. but that's just my .02$
