Unfortunately it has come to our attention that someone is attempting to spread a virus, claiming to be part of our dev. team and linking to a false demo file.

Please be safe and only download files here on the official game Patreon.  If you see someone claiming to be part of the team and spreading suspicious files, please let us know here or on the Changeling Tale Discord channel.

Originally we had planned to make the demo available to Patrons only for a few weeks as an exclusive reward to everyone who has supported the project.  However, in light of these events, we are now considering making the demo public early so that people don't accidentally download the false file.

We don't want our supporters to feel shortchanged, though, so let us know in the quick poll below how you feel!

Keep it Patron-exclusive for a little while longer in order to reduce the possibility of these attacks. Maybe it's just me, but I think that if the real file was available publicly, that might make it easier for whoever is doing this to snatch it up, modify it, and pass it off as a more legitimate version. That could just be my paranoia talking, but I think it's plausible.

I can't afford the pateron right now and still say keep the demo exclusive for a few more weeks, get out there that this is happening more on FA. Releasing it now is only more likely to have people doing this.

Nekonomicon

I say go ahead and make it public. With the official release here the probability of anyone falling for the fake link will be reduced.

So, I'm not a patron for the single reason I haven't tested the game. In my opinion, any game who wants anyone to pledge should have a demo of some kind publicly available. It's just logical business practice. If you demo can't convince someone to pledge, then ... well, I guess it's mostly a problem for scammers.

LittleNapoleon

I definitely agree that that's plausible, but I'm also hopeful that once the demo is public, this page will be the only place people will go to download it. It's amazing we have to be worried about this sort of thing, this day and age @_@

I'm honestly not surprised. There seem to be more and more malicious people online every single day. It's the whole anonymity of the screen bullshit that causes behavior like this, and, unfortunately, without compromising a lot of freedom - there's no way to fix it. I'm just hoping the furry community stays a niche group so we don't see what happened to the gaming community happen to us, though that's a whole other tangent. Silver lining: you can take this as a positive sign of you and your team's success with this game! It's coming along so nicely that someone is using you as a disguise. Creepy, but flattering if you ask me. They figure "Oh this is so cool and so popular I can get away with anything if I masquerade as this person/group!"

LittleNapoleon

Oh, for sure, it was always the plan to release it publicly! We just wanted to reward the folks who have supported development to date with some exclusive access for a time, as thanks ^^

I'll be honest, I'm not concerned with getting "short changed". I donated because I love your art, and think your game concept looked interesting. I was glad to contribute(even though I admit it wasn't that much), and was just interested in helping getting it made. I wish I could have done more to help. Do whatever you think is prudent.

LittleNapoleon

Thank you so much for your support! We're really thankful that for every one of these troublemakers, there seem to be hundreds of honest and supportive people such as yourself.

Mr Nibz

Releasing the demo hopefully = more patreons and more money for you guys hence longer and more beautiful game. Everybody wins.

HiakuTzuaki

I sorta feel like you should have made this a patreon-only poll thing since of course everyone that isn't a patreon is going to vote to have it out early (Myself included), but regardless, it does seem like the best course of action so no one gets screwed by getting desperate. Viruses suck :/

If you do see any suspicious links, do be sure to report those to the hosting service in question. Most companies aren't fans of being used to spread malware.

Zoey P.

I've been lurking for a while -- as much as I want to play it, I don't want to pledge without playing the demo first!

LittleNapoleon

That was my fault, I wanted to let everyone know about this troublemaker, and probably should have made the poll as a separate post... but I'd already posted thrice and didn't want to further spam people's emails @_@

LittleNapoleon

Totally understand! We were going to make it public after a time, it just looks like that time is sooner than later ^^;

HiakuTzuaki

Aye, gotcha. It certainly grabbed my attention and the world is now aware of such troublemakers, so you did a good :3

SpecialSpoon

Dang, I had no idea this was a problem, and I hadn't even made time to play the demo, yet @.@;;
