Hey guys, first video in a while. Since I made indigo carmine a while ago, ive been meaning to make this video. I hope you like it.

Let me know what you guys think of it!

Also, let me know if your name should be at the end of the video, but it isnt there. It will be added in the final version. I also know there's a mistake where the credits start rolling again, but that will be fixed before the final version.

The next videos coming out after this will also be pretty interesting. Ill be making some amalgams, recreating NurdRage's sodium prep, and i a lot more!

The chemical traffic light

In this video, I'll be recreating the popular demonstration called the Chemical Traffic Light Reaction. Note: I made a mistake in the video. I said the carbonate solution would have a pH around 8-9, but it would actually be closer to 11-12. I was thinking of sodium bicarbonate when I said that. Cool. If the dye Indigo carmine is aged it has a different color change effect.

I have to say, that was a pretty perfect video

nilered

Yup. I ran into that problem with a bunch of indigo carmine that I recently bought...

The only comment I have is about some of the text. Yellow font on a white background is not great for reading.

Pretty cool. Perhaps you should mention the "blue bottle experiment" too? It's the exact same thing, but with methylene blue instead of indigo carmine. It goes from clear to blue when you shake it. The color change isn't as pretty, but methylene blue should be easier to come by than indigo carmine. It's also not as sensitive to pH (works as long as it's basic).

Are you going to wait for NurdRage to finalise his sodium prep? It does look like he's almost wrapped it up at this point though.

Joshua Thomas

You mentioned that this reaction can only be done a few times. What's the mechanism behind this?

Anonymous

Come on man, I've been a Patreon of yours for literally 3 years now -- please stop forgetting my name in the credits :(

Silviu T

The dextrose, which provides the reducing power that drives the redox reaction, gets depleted. Also as long as the vessel is kept with a stopper on, the oxygen in the air above the solution gets depleted too (it provides the other end of the redox reaction). Essentially the whole process can be represented as the oxidation of glucose (dextrose) to gluconic acid by the oxygen, catalyzed by the indigo carmine. The color changes illustrate the intermediate phases through which the catalyst goes during the process.

nilered

Ive actually done that reaction before! I think i did it two years ago

nilered

Unfortunately, there isnt much i can do about it. If i do a black background, the other colors dont show up as well. I tried a gray one, which is think was the best middle ground

nilered

Im supposed to be doing it, but im busy with a couple other projects at the moment

nilered

Hey, i am so sorry. I honestly dont know how that happens. Its honestly really hard to track rewards with Patreon and I have to do it all manually and somehow i keep messing up.

nilered

Ill just keep you there permanently now lol, no matter what Patreon says. Even if you leave, ill keep it, just to be sure :p

Gabriel J.

Oh, right, I remember now! Well that's an embarrassing mistake...

Silviu T

Dark orange text would be more legible and a reasonable substitute for yellow. Or leave it as-is, mostly chemistry nerds are interested in formulas anyway and they probably know them without having to read'em. :)

Silviu T

If you're reading the scimad forums you may have noticed I'm preparing to try and reduce some camphor to borneol/isoborneol (with Urushibara nickel) with that sodium prep in mind. Camphor is much easier to find than borneol. Perhaps something to add to your channel?

nilered

Yeah, i should have, but its too late now. Making the graphics were really annoying lol, so ill just leave it as is :p
