I think... is the answer.  After two break tests and surviving after doing it for 15 years, I think sharpie permanent markers are safe-ish.  HOWEVER, after hanging out with Brent Roth who is helping us launch our HowNOT2 Canyon series, I'm a believer in the Beal rope marker found at https://amzn.to/3yUZUhy.  He gives a firehose of useful information in rope care and marking your ropes.  This is one of our best episodes!
