amazon, asbestos, the 4 hr work day (Patreon)
Content
thought i'd send through sum words about what i've been working on these last weeks.
what follows is a round up of unpaid work that the sweet patreon coin has enabled me to focus on over the last month. thanku again for the support. it's made a huge difference i can now choose more strategically what wld be useful to work on, rather than keeping half of my mind on my wallet.
I just got back from two weeks in Jogjakarta, with the excellent Comic Art Workshop crew. We spent the fortnight developing our longform graphic works, mine being about collectivism. the time + focus was invaluable to the development of the book. everyone laughed when i told them i hoped to get mine finished by next year tho heh so i might be in for a longer haul than i had anticipated.
this is one of our workshops taking place in the Indonesian Visual Art Archive.
we were hosted by screenprinting studio 'Krack!' who were fkn angels + super talented, u shld visit them if you are ever in jogjakarta
spent sum time in the gaps trying to think of ways to utilise two colour printing methods
the Krack crew, Eky, Rudy, Keppet, Malcolm, and Rigozzi kindly produced this print of a drawing i did during one of the workshops:
i had the chance to meet with several local activists + unionists over there, which was good research for the book, and useful from an organising perspective. in particular i spent time w sum young workers from asbestos production sites, who are fighting for better safety conditions, and perhaps an eventual ban on the material, as we have in aus. this will be a long fight since it was only this year that an asbestos related illness was first formally recognised by the govt. but they are keen as and using the campaign to build community and broad organisation. hopefully i'm gonna be able to produce sum graphics to support their campaigns in coming months we'll see
we also got to paint this goofy mural thanx to our mates Vendy, Enka and Eky:
linocut i liked hanging on Survive Garage collective wall:
the 'defend and extend public housing' campaign is going strong. click the link above 2 get involved if u want to / are able.
i printed up sum large cardboard versions of the floating building drawing i did for them, for use at their rallys:
+ drew the first cartoon that will be part of the raft of unlicensed union graphics, which i'll make available for free + translate into different languages. i wanna try draw one a month, so these monthly emails will be a good way for me to stay on top of that.
Amazon is arriving in australia, with their first warehouse currently recruiting. amazon are soon to become the planet's biggest corporation, and Jeff Bezos, the company's founder is now the richest human on earth. Amazon is notoriously, like, creatively anti-union, and viciously anti worker, and are likely to permanently alter the industrial landscape. the National Union of Workers are priming themselves for the fight. i drew this small unlicensed pic for ppl + unions to use if anyone wants :
i drew a pic for the cover of SHIFT, a new publication to engage young ppl around industrial issues. if u or anyone u know esp young ppl might want to contribute any artwork or writing to the journal, let me know.
the image wll be coloured sumhow but this is the design::
also drew this placeholder logo for them
i'm just about to send out thankus in the post 2 ppl who pledged to support this patreon during october. if u are in australia + havent yet received anything in the post by the end of next wk, pls let me know and and i'll resend.
also if u know anyone who might support the above kinds of projects and might have a couple of dollars to spare, pls consider forwarding this email on to them. the more $ the more experimental stuff i can try out, like printing large format banners and placards and free propaganda stuff like that. or if u have sum extra money yourself, u might also like to pledge to the recently launched 'Solidarity and Defence Legal Fund' which is a super practical + democratic way to support activists and keep ppl in our communities out of jail.
<3 from sam, thank you again srsly! here's a bug outside Krack studio x
