Wassup Patrons, here's this month's classic review of Redman's debut album titled 'Whut? Thee Album' released on September 22nd, 1992. This was nominated by KyoriTheOkapi and here's why he believes this album is a classic.
"Back in ‘92, I imagine that no one in the entire music industry was like Redman. He popularized aliases in Hip-Hop, he was from the Bricks, and he had De La Soul-style skits with a Reggie Noble twist. Come to think of it, he is like the embodiment of De La Soul in one hard-ass street dude (goofy, eclectic, but insanely creative).
Erick Sermon knew what he was doing back in the day. Not only picking him up as an artist, but for laying out the hard and unequivocally funky landscape, perfect for Redman.
While I know that many state that Muddy Waters is Redman’s best album, I still go back to this album the most. All the samples helped build a stronger connection with my mom, who listened to all of those funk/soul groups that E.A.R. Productions (Erick and Reggie) used. Plus, on Blow Your Mind, he rapped in Korean DECADES before Google translate!! Absolutely insane hearing that for an Asian American!!
Yeah, there is no album like Whut? Thee Album for me, and it remains in my top 10 favorites of all time. I just want to know what it was like when it dropped back in the day since I wasn’t born yet!
And yes, it did deserve to beat Get Rich or Die Tryin’ in the Solo Debut bracket! 😂"
