JACK IN THE BOX GOT NAMED THE TOP #9 ALBUM TO BE RELEASED THIS YEAR BY ROLLING STONE

Aishwarya Majumdar

It's so interesting how Namjoon says he feels so distanced from Mono. It makes sense - it's his work and his feelings and he's an entirely different person now, but it has been one of my top Comfort Albums^TM, as well as several others, for so long - like a hug of acceptance on a rainy day. I hope he knows that. Thanks for this Michael!

Helen St. John

Oh my gosh, I'm so excited!

JoY

There are alot different translators out there usually for me if doolset hasn't had time yet to finish it. I go with bangtansubs they are usually the best source. Here you go https://www.bangtansubs.com/yun

Liz

I love this album so much truly no skips for me and all the features went so well with the songs, you can tell namjoon was really thoughtful of everything, it just got better for me after watching the magazine film where he explains each track's meaning alongside with commentary of some of the producers and the features, I really recommend it if you wanna know more about the whole process! https://youtu.be/lRy8OYhLO-A was waiting for this, thanks for the video! 😊

eve🐱🏀

i am so glad we had the exact same reaction to change pt2. 😭 i was expecting something related to his song change with wale but i was PLEASANTLY surprised. caught me off guard in the best way. top 3 for me for sure!

emmie jeans

Its crazy to me and a little scary to think that rm would want to delete tracks off of mono because it is selfishly such a comfort album for me. I love it so much, can’t wait for you to listen. Also this album is so gorgeous, glad I got to listen with you,

alessia

I think it's a good thing that he doesn't associate himself with some of the tracks anymore because it was sad and dark although comforting, filled with honest confessions related to his feelings at the time, the thought that he has overcome some of the struggles makes me happy.

JoY

Change pt 2 damn I love it but Who hurt him .

emmie jeans

speaking of Seoul, he has a song on mono called Seoul, but I’m pretty sure he grew up in Ilsan (another city) but his music career began in Seoul (he started writing at like 13 and then did underground rapping before bts), so in mono his relationship with seoul is really interesting. Also references to flowers, my favourite song ever is everythingoes(also in mono) and i won’t spoil but it does compares people to flowers.

mFortyFive

Change pt2 is my favorite. The producer he collaborated with is eAeon (pronounced ee-ee-un). RM has worked with him before and RM was also featured on his track, 'Don't,' which is incredible. His songs are all amazing, and like you said, different and unique. You should check out his work for sure!

Hafsa

I don't know if its just me but I think zayn and rm could collab and have music conversations I like how their values aligned..😚

Kritika

Was waiting for this reaction, so thank you! :) I truly loved the album. I didn't expect to like each and every song, with no skips. Every song genuinely feels like a diary entry. I'm so happy for him and also so proud of him. Wild flower really did something to me emotionally, he really shared so much of himself in that song. It was also the first one I heard so it really shook me.

emmie jeans

for sure!! it’s so interesting how both albums are so different yet hold similarities lyrically. they are both two different periods in his life, and as a listener you can find comfort in both albums for different reasons. 🫶

elisa

can't wait to watch this. mono is my favorite album of all time and it means a lot to me, it helped me in some of the worst moments of my life. I even recently got a tattoo of the song everythingoes! it's interesting to hear joon doesn't necessarily align with the tracks on mono but listening to indigo i can understand why. it's seriously a masterpiece and i'm sure it'll become another all time favorite for me. i'm so happy he released this and got to express himself like this

emmie jeans

*also when i say crazy it just means i’m surprised cos i hold that album so close to my heart 💜

ojochan

YASSSSS! I haven’t watched the reaction but just wanted to say thank you for doing this. I’ll watch it when I get home from work 💜

Michael Beveraggi

I feel like that’s the case with lots of artists & their first work & I totally understand it, as we all grow. I bet it’s still wonderful though & can’t wait to listen! That’s so cool about the tattoo Elisa!!

Michael Beveraggi

I love that description! A hug of acceptance on a rainy day! Also LOVE your name, Aishwarya! Thank you for being here 💜

jennptx

Kim Namjoon is a fucking ARTIST. I know that he wishes he was a better painter, but the way he uses words to make his own complex, complicated feelings so relatable, that show he's just a human like the rest of us, that we're ALL capable of being fireworks and just no-name flowers in a field--he's a master painter with words. This album is such a gift. Every song perfectly placed. I hope he's proud of himself and feeling at peace now that it's out in the world. Thank you for sharing your reaction with us. It only gets better on multiple listens!

Ellie

I just started the video and had to stop right when you said you were unfamiliar with a lot of the artists featuring because one of my first thoughts when I saw you reacted to the album was 'He NEEDS to listen to Epik High!' which is Tablo's group. They've been around for 20 years (Tablo just doesn't age lol) and in terms of hard hitting lyrics, you can't do better honestly. Hopefully I'll manage to get into the request tier one of these days =D

jennptx

I've been following Tablo for a while on Twitter, but just started listening to Epik High this weekend and watching some of his podcasts. Genius.

Ellie

The master's degree in creative writing really didn't come from nowhere haha For some hard-hitting stuff, Remapping the Human Soul is an amazing album!

Yukari

So much to say! But I have to go to work!!!!

Fabiana Souza

Closer is such a masterpice. Im in love with Paul Blanco. RM gave us everthing with this álbum.

ellie

So cool you listened to the interview before this, tablo is from a group called Epik High, im pretty sure you’ve listened to a song or two here, but they were a huge inspiration to bts. Suga produced a track for them couple years ago and bts named them as their inspiration in a song on dark&wild. So cool that they finally collaborated because everytime tablo breathes on twitter armys are on his ass about a collab. He’s a really cool dude and a really supportive friend of the boys. I appreciate you a lot and can’t wait for your reactions to the rest of the bts albums and solo mixtapes

Ellie

Still Life is even more interesting when you think of 'still life' paintings which are commonly paintings of inanimate subjects, so the 'I'm still life but still moving' is a real play on words haha The beautiful fireworks at the end of the Wildflower MV are traditional Korean fireworks, they're basically little pouches filled with powder and tied to ropes over lakes then lit up so the powder falls down. Firework in Korean is 'fire flower' so flowerwork would have made sense! Oh and the myth of Orpheus tells his story as he goes down to the underworld to get back his wife who died, he's allowed to but under the condition that he doesn't look back at her until they're both back in the light. Buuut he does and she's dead for good... More modern interpretations of the myth see Eurydice (the wife) as being past thoughts and memories that you cannot go back to/get back. Hence the 'don't look back'. Maaan sorry for the dissertation, it's just stuff that popped up while watching the video haha

Mariana

I woke up at 5 am for work and my first thought was "gosh, I hate waking up at this hour". My second thought was "OMG Beveraggi reacted to Indigo!!! YESS" And watched it while I was getting ready for work. So thanks so much for bringing on my first bright thought of the day. I'm so glad you listened to Zach's interview beforehand, truly one of the best American interviewers, since their beginning he has always shown respect for them and have always asked the best questions. Like Liz commented way up here, there's a magazine video on BANGTANTV of him and every artist on the album talking about each song. Highly recommend you to watch it. It's 40 minutes long, something you'd like to watch before going to bed. (can't link it because youtube is blocked in my office but Liz shared the link) I love this album with my whole soul, I love how he poured his 20's in it and how he's expressed how he wants us to use this album, so there's a song for us to relate to and make our playlist for any other time in our lives. Mono is also my comfort album so even if Namjoon doesn't feel as connected as before to some songs, I still do and I love him for freeing them to the world.

Veronika

I've lost count of how many times I've listened to this album by now, but somehow I fall more in love with it each time. Truly, I don't have the words to express how I feel about this album, it has connected with me in a way unlike anything else. So happy that you loved it as well, and that you give it the time and attention it deserves. People have already mentioned the magazine film that was posted on their youtube channel, but it really is a great video for you to watch in your own time. Really great to hear his collaborators' thoughts about the songs, as well as his own.

H

I just love your reactions. RM really was a museum curator. He introduced us to old artist and new and blended the showcase so it all worked seamlessly. I just love every part of this album.

Giu Bressani

Michael did react to Epik High once! I didn't expect him to remember who Tablo was tho. It was for a may request, posted June 12th!

Nadilynn

RM did ask us to listen to this project in order. A lot of care has been taken to lead us to feel and see what he is telling us. Thank you as always for loving this experience along side of me. These human feelings are a little less lonely now.

Yukari

I was so excited to see you’ve reacted to Indigo…I’ve been waiting! This is such an incredibly personal gift from RM and I just heard him say on Yoongi’s new YT show (it’s so fun that he and his guest drink and talk) that he’s working on a new album and that he may release it before his enlistment. Like others suggested, The Magazine Film is a must! I love that collaborators talk about how they were recruited and their experience working with Joon. I felt so pained after listening to the album about all the heartaches he endured but he seems to be in a good place now after watching Suchwita (Yoongi’s show). Just thinking about the role that he had as a leader of the group at such a young age, shielding the ugly western criticism from other members…he must have felt lonely. I think the song Lonely is not just the physical loneliness but also the mental loneliness of perhaps not being able to share some of the feelings he had. I love the variety of genres in this album! I’ve been listening to this non-stop! I cry almost every time I’ve listened to Wild Flower and I’ve listened to it about 60 times already according to my AM count! I love Youjeen’s energy and the angsty voice! And No. 2 is special to me, especially Park Jiyoon singing with him to not look back. She’s had her own struggles with the industry after her Coming Of Age came out (JK and Jimin danced to this song!) I’m probably leaving some thoughts out, it I must teach! I’m sure I’ll watch this again! Sorry for the long paragraph. I’m on the phone and it’s hard to add new lines. Thank you again for such a thoughtful reaction!

fairynamu

by the way, you DEFINITELY have to check out mono.! i am 100000% sure ure gonna love it. It's so deep.

Julia Stock

The story behind Change pt. 2 is so cool. RM got really drunk and recorded the whole thing without a beat😅

Kate N

I love this album and I loved listening to it with you!!! I knew you’d love it, and when you say the re-listen value is high, that is no lie. I’ve been listening to it constantly and I absolutely can’t get enough! I really do hear new things with every listen!! 💜💜

DanielleM

Thank you so much for this reaction!! I hope you can watch Rm's solo Tiny Desk performance soon!

Michel

I fell in love with this album on a first listen, I was so emotional after I finished it and just cried my eyes out lol. Wild Flower broke me, the lyrics, the emotions, the sound, it's such a special song. Knowing how much the guys have struggled with not just the fame and "BTS things" but also with internal things, something regular people deal with too, just makes them even more relatable and greater as artists, and I've been so emotional this past year getting to learn some of their shadows a bit more. Achieving your dreams and even bigger things that were beyond your imagination, yet losing yourself in process. It breaks my heart that they got to a point where they had to put everything on pause and go back to their beginnings to find the reason why they started doing music in the first place. Something that means so much to them, yet it was slipping through their fingers like sand. I'm so incredibly proud of these men and I'm so happy that chapter 2 has proven to be the healthiest choice they have ever made.

2023-05-06 13:52:07 And to talk just a bit more about the album itself - definitely a no skip for me (although that's their whole discography for me - no exaggeration). My top 3 are probably Wild Flower, All Day & Closer. Change pt. 2 shocked everyone I think, I guess we expected a similar sound to Change (pt. 1) with Wale but eAeon said NOPE. Also, RM said he recorded the demo drunk and that take ended up on album. We all knew he was gonna serve with his lyricism and of course he did not disappoint. I especially love the way he thinks and appreciates art so much and how he incorporates that into his music - he has said he wanted to create music that is timeless & makes people feel things, whether when they come back to it or experience it for the first time. Just like art. He's not a painter, but he's an artist and uses his pen instead of a brush to create masterpieces that will live in people's minds and hearts even after time passes by. (Just look at how mono has us all on a chokehold even after 4 years, lol.)

Someone else may haven answered this already - but the opening and closing narration in Yun, is actually a recording of the artist himself, talking about the themes of the song (that you have to be a human, and have human experiences, before you do art).

Yukari

BTW, Seoul is the capital of SKorea and is pronounced “Soul” as best as I can represent it. And yes, please listen to Mono. To me, Tokyo and Lonely tie together.

FlyUshkiFly

It always takes me a minute to settle into new music - even from my most-loved artists. After hearing RM and the features describe each track, it all made sense. Then listening with you, Michael, and the pieces are all put together. Thank you for connecting me to the music on a deeper level once again! 💜

haley!

Wow, I wasn't aware that Park Jiyoon struggled after that song came out. If you don't mind me asking, could you let me know what those were? Or point me to some sources that could inform me?

Yukari

I think she had misgivings about where her career was going after Coming of Age, where she was portrayed as a sexy young woman. I believe shortly after that, she left the industry for awhile. Here is a quick video. https://youtu.be/d4NrmvvyHNs

Mily

Please look at the "Indigo Album Magazine Film", there Namjoon explains track by track, what he inspires and what he feel. After you look that interview indigo feels more deep and beautiful💜

-Mac-

It's bed time and I just saw this is up. I will come back and watch you tomorrow! I'm so happy you got to this.

Raven

im so happy you did this. this album is so great, I cant stop listening from beginning to end. I hope you still do Mono, its been one of my comfort albums for the longest time and I honestly love all the tracks. after dark and wild if you continue solo projects D2 is my fave, Yoongi really speaks to me lyrically and has amazing solo songs

Mariana

Hi, I'm back here. I think no one else mentioned this but after the album's release he did a live in form of an art exhibition with a piece per song (or per "blue" as he called them) explaining what each song talks about. I haven't been able to watch it with subtitles yet, just read some live translations from twitter army translators who were fighting for their lives because he was talking too fast LOL. Anyway, I just thought of mentioning it because of his choice of presenting them as art pieces which goes so well with him, and the album inspo, and just his mind. Oh and he also sang some of the songs live there. Leaving the link below. https://weverse.io/bts/live/3-108458696 Still highly recommend the Magazine film on BangtanTV youtube channel.

chimelle6

Ohhhh thank you for this reminder to go back to Weverse! I haven’t gotten to watch that with subs yet either!

Mariana

There's been so much content all at once, it's hard to keep up :')

Radiant_Allomancer

I just finished my semester today, so I was finally able to listen to this whole album before I came to watch your reaction! I’m literally so in love with this album and I adore everything one it, you’re so right about the replay value!! Gonna go on an enthusiastic rant here, so hang tight! I know I saw another comment mention it, but in art, a “still life” is a painting that is a study of inanimate objects, rather than people, frozen in time. It originally started out with Renaissance artists trying to make it as realistic as possible, they would arrange a bowl of fruit or maybe a vase of flowers, all that sort of stuff, and would try to paint everything (including any shadows or blemishes) exactly as they saw it. So a still life is literally a moment frozen in time. Eventually, still life paintings started to vary as different artists would apply their own art styles in these paintings, such as Picasso doing a still life with Cubism. So when RM is saying “I’m still life, but I’m moving” he is literally referencing the art style where everything is frozen in time, but I think that the fact that the way he and Anderson .Paak say “I’m still life” sounds like “I’m still alive” means that because he’s a living person, he can never be a true still life, frozen in time, because he’s a living person who can move on from past moments in time. My interpretation is that RM is talking about how everybody has an image of him based on his past work, both with BTS and by himself, but all those works and eras are simply moments in time, they are still life frozen moments, but where and who he is now is beyond that, because everything and everybody changes, thus connecting “Still Life” to “Change pt 2” specifically, but also the rest of the album. Also, because plants are often parts of still life paintings, I think the line in the song about him being a weed, a plant, but he moves, is the essence of the song, and indeed the whole album, boiled down to the simplest yet most meaningful metaphor! And now the “Still Life” music video has come out, and it is excellent! It mimics all the frozen in time metaphors with beautiful imagery! I hadn’t watched the Zach Sang interview yet because of school, so I didn’t even realize that “No. 2” was full of Orpheus references, but that makes so much sense!! In Greek mythology, Orpheus was a musician who made the sweetest music on his lyre, rivaling the skills of the Greek god Apollo, who was (among many other things) the god of music. Orpheus was married to Eurydice, and they had an incredibly happy relationship until she was bitten by a snake and died. Orpheus, absolutely devastated and determined to get his wife back, ended up going straight into the Underworld to try to return Eurydice to life. He played music on his lyre to Cerberus, the three-headed dog who guards the entrance to the Underworld, so sweetly that Cerberus fell asleep. This is why I got freaked out as a 6 year old when my mom was reading me Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone: because I had already been reading Greek mythology, I literally thought their first encounter with Fluffy was at the literal entrance to the Underworld! And that’s why the movie version has Fluffy being played to sleep by a charmed harp, because lyres and harps are both string instruments! After passing Cerberus and making his way to the throne room of Hades, Orpheus ended up playing such sweet music to Hades (and some stories also have Persephone helping convince Hades to give Orpheus a chance, because she’s very moved by their love story that is similar yet diametrically different to hers and Hades), that Hades told Orpheus that he’d let Eurydice’s spirit return to life, all he would have to do is play music on the way back to the Living World to ward off all other spirits, but he also cannot look back to check if she’s there. If he looks back, Eurydice’s spirit will return to her place in the Underworld, and Orpheus will have utterly failed to return her to life. So Orpheus does his thing, he plays his music, he imagines he hears Eurydice’s spirit following him, but by the time they almost reach the entrance to the Living World, he’s not sure that Hades has kept his promise because he can’t hear if Eurydice’s really there. So he decides to look back, just to check, and it turns out she had actually been with him the entire journey back to the surface, but because he looked back, she will remain dead and Orpheus has tragically failed and lost his chance to bring his love back to life. He failed to have faith in the gods and disobeyed them, so this is his punishment. Honestly, there’s a lot of Greek mythology references everywhere, especially in music. I know you’ve mentioned you have ADHD (and I have it too!), so I know how difficult it can be to just sit down to read something that seems so daunting, high brow and onerous like getting into the complexities of mythology that you might not have a great deal of interest in. So you are completely welcome to take this suggestion with a grain of salt, but when I was a child, I absolutely adored D’Aulaires’ Book of Greek Mythology! It has a pretty good spread of different Greek myths and really beautiful artwork, and while it is aimed at children and thus doesn’t necessarily present the most accurate-to-the-original myths and so it doesn’t get across all the gory and raunchy details from the original stories, it does very well at presenting these myths in a way that is easy to understand and remember, especially with its beautiful art. From what I recall, the myth of Orpheus should be in that book, and the myth surrounding the birth of Dionysus is definitely in it. If you do choose to read it, I highly recommend looking back at the BTS song “Dionysus” because then you’ll pick up on even more mythological references like him being a twice-born god! There’s also important references to Dionysian and Apollonian art! I think it was your YouTube video where I left a whole comment on the Dionysian mysteries too? Or maybe it was another reactor? Either way, the Ancient Greeks had mystic cults that were obsessed with eternal life based on specific myths that had something to do with coming back to life. These were the Dionysian mysteries (based on the god of wine and madness, Dionysus, being twice-born and thus reborn, also he was torn apart by animals once and came back to life), the Eleusinian mysteries (the goddess of the harvest Demeter searched for a way to bring her daughter Persephone essentially back to life after her kidnapping/marriage to the god of the Underworld, Hades), and the Orphic mysteries (based on the musician, Orpheus, whose myth regarding bringing people back to life I told you above). Uh, long rant over! EDIT: Wait no I forgot about “All Day” ft. Tablo!!! Tablo is a member of Epik High, a 2nd generation K-pop group (BTS is from the 3rd generation) whose entire style and their song “Fly” in particular was a huge influence to RM and Suga! Like, they’ve said that if they didn’t hear “Fly” they wouldn’t have ended up in BTS because they wouldn’t have had the inspiration to mix Korean and English rap in hip hop, and Epik High responded and said that they’re really glad they made that song, because it brought about BTS! In fact, that song is the major inspiration behind the BTS song “Wings”, like “Fly, fly, get ‘em up high” is a direct quote from the Epik High song! So it is absolutely incredible and meaningful that RM did a song with Tablo and referenced it so heavily!

chimelle6

Oh, how I just love going through albums with you, especially bts ones. Brings me so much joy. I have so much I want to say, but I'll just stick with three for now. haha (as always sorry if I'm repeating anything!) I keep finding so much meaning in this album, but one of the things I love most is it tying back to bts albums (as jack and the box nodded to as well). They were originally going to start their solo works (and I believe start enlistments in the same way that they're doing now) after their mots7 tour and I find it so beautiful that that album was all about searching your soul and all the struggles and ending with ego and talking about our egos in a positive way (when 'ego' is usually looked at negatively) then for them to split off to show their own individual egos/souls. Such a clever and well planned idea with so much heart behind it. It is not unusual for members in kpop groups to go solo and/or enlist but I've never seen it done this way with it combined and so much care for each other and fans. (Not that other groups don't care about each other and fans, that's definitely not what I'm trying to say there.) I really love how Joonie handpicked each of the artists. He has said that all of his first choices were the ones on the album and it shows. You can tell that each artist is handpicked for the genre he was going for, but also their personal story reflects the message of the song. Like No. 2 with Park Jiyoon. A song about not looking back on your regrets but even with that this version of yourself is the best version. Jiyoon became famous very young and had a song called 'coming of age ceremony' that her company pushed on her and is very sexual (especially for korean standards at that time) so she was extremely oversexualized and shunned for it and semi soon after she left her company and disappeared for a while. She has since comeback with a wonderful career very different from her one in the past. And the songs that touch on longevity in the industry all have artists that are considered 'old' to typical entertainment standards, especially the women. Erykah Badu, Youjeen, Park Jiyoon, and Tablo are all 40+. Just the details in this album are insane. I'm sure someone has already said this last point, but the fireworks in the mv were all real. The point where they are falling down in that unique way when you had to pause and mention how beautiful it was is a traditional korean fireworks festival display called nakhwa nori, which means falling flames, which reminds me of the lines 'I longed for flames I wanted to go down beautifully I'd imagined it before the start smiling applause at the end' and just the fact that he has had the idea of the concept of this song since 2016 ... not long after the time they were getting their first music show wins in korea and had no idea the levels they would reach, just how big and high their 'fireworks' would go ... koreans becoming house hold names in the west? in america, the biggest music industry?, ... is insane to me. I could say so much more about this album, but I'll end here! haha

Mariana

Ah! A Greek mythology enthusiast, we love to see! :D

-Mac-

This album really does feel like a diary. I feel as if he cracked it open and said, "Here, read this. This is how I've been feeling."

mFortyFive

That is really interesting. I never knew of nakhwa-nori. That is actually brilliant because nak means falling, but hwa can mean both flower or fire! Just how this ties into the wordplay between bulkot-nori (fireworks) and dulkot-nori (wildflower-works) is just genius on another freakin' level.

mFortyFive

When my friends want to know how to pronounce Seoul I tell them its su'ool, the 'su' like 'sup?' and 'ool' like 'cool'. But I also like soul. Its close enough, and I like the fact that it sounds like an awesome word.

Caroline B.

I feel like i fall in love with this album a little bit more every time i listen to it and it just won't stop even after listening top to bottom dozens of times... I hope you'll watch the "magazine documentary" of the album where he breaks down each song and every collabing artist talks about their songs, it's really amazing to watch

victoria

mono is one of my favorite things to ever be released by bts. I really cannot wait to watch your reaction to it.

Bangtan is life

Since you’re still only a baby army Michael I’ll forgive you for not already knowing that the rap line could sing 😂 can’t wait for you to get to Mono now! And also I think you’d enjoy Bicycle 😊

Bangtan is life

I cried the first time hearing wild flower and I don’t cry a lot 😅 but Namjoon shattered me with that song!

Hailey Lee

When you said it is obvious that RM listens to a wide range of music, fun fact, during their early days, RM would download many songs in a usb and would tell the other members to listen to them as like homework. It's so cool to see them having so much passion for music.

signe !

aahh i feel the exact same way. mono truly gives u comfort like no other <3 i also have a tattoo of everythingoes, that song means so much to me

Vanessa

btw i'm prety sure you have actually listened to tablo (all day feature) because he's a member of epik high who i think you watched in a custom request
