Hey, this video still doesn't work, it keeps saying "this video does not exist", the "june custom request (cont.)" is in the same way. Can you fix these two? I really want to rewatch them :(

Jacqueline

Thank you for listening to "For you" by The Vamps. It's my favourite song.

An earlier commenter (chimelle6) talked about how many of BTS's hardships came from institutions/systems themselves rather than from finding fans. This is a VERY important fact. Even ignoring the issues with Western media coverage - the push back from the Korean industry was (and is) immense. This might seem strange, as you would think Korea would be so excited to see the success of their artist on a global stage. However, because their success occurred outside of institutions -- they succeeded DESPITE obstacles/pushbacks they faced from tv networks, media companies, etc -- these companies have always been reticent to support them as they should. Their media coverage of BTS's shift to solo projects was so horrendous that - for the first time that I know of - RM actually wrote a letter the next day in anger at the sensationalized and incorrect news coverage by Korean media. There is a VERY important interview by a political commentator with Kim Youngdae (ARMY, if you don't know this name, you should learn it!). He is a Korean music critic who has been following BTS since about 2014. He was living in the US at the time (he might still be? but he keeps appearing on all these Korean TV networks so maybe he moved back?), has a PhD in music something-or-other, interviewed BTS after one of their early BBMAs, interviewed Suga for their most recent GQ (or Vogue) interview, and has actually written a book about BTS. In this 2020 interview, Kim Youngdae talks about how when he's being interviewed by Korean news networks about BTS's 2020 grammy nomination - they kept framing their questions as if BTS had failed: "But this isn't a major category right?", "It's because the song is in English isn't it?" "Since it is an award for a song, it just means Dynamite was popular, it doesn't mean that BTS is actually popular, right?" He goes onto talk about how Korean media - to this day - downplays or under reports BTS's successes. (Here's a link to the interview if you are interested: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n1qZzHGNIkE&list=PLGvSTV49PIW4zK_v-Us1JVdDhtNiNJ0os&index=30) it is insane to me that this group not only had to face xenophobia and other issues abroad, but didn't even have a 'safe space' in their home country. Also - what you said about being doubly impressed by the vulnerability of their lyrics knowing about these hardships. Yes, yes, 1,000x YES. I consider BTS's vulnerability despite very real and very cruel attacks against them to be one the most courageous and amazing things about them. Typically, when people are cruel to you, you put up a tough outer shell. But they literally became kinder and kinder and kinder, and more and more open. I'm in awe. And it is certainly one of the things that makes ARMY so fiercely protective of them, as we realize what a precious gift they have given us in their vulnerability. I love all your reactions!! thanks so much!!

Yes, to all this! And just wanted to add that after their dinner where they’re very vulnerable and emotional talking about needing a break and the media misconstrues what they say and rm/Namjoon/Joonie posts his letter the president of the Korean singer’s association publicly posted this: “I’m overcome by my fear and concern that the 'BTS Hallyu Wave', a movement possessing the greatest cultural soft power that the world has ever witnessed, will vanish soon. In the years leading up to the birth of this movement, it was believed that finding the 'Next Beatles' would be a very difficult achievement, and now, we have arrived at a point where it is difficult to hope for the 'Next BTS' to emerge any time soon. Thus, there is great concern that the heartbeat of Hallyu will cease. The decision to publish this statement was not an easy one. Please, will you reconsider the decision to go on a group hiatus, for the future of South Korea's music industry? If BTS goes away, the missionaries of Hallyu and Korean culture, ARMYs, also go away. South Korea's tourism industry will suffer, and it will be difficult to hope for a future for South Korea as a hub of culture in Asia. The special laws allotted to the sports and the classical music and arts industries for mandatory military service must be extended to popular culture as well. The need for attention and action regarding this existing issue is pressing. The government and the national assembly of South Korea must pay mind to this matter so that the Hallyu boom can continue to spread, and BTS can continue to promote actively as a group. Please pursue a revision of existing military service laws.” The amount of pressure these men are under … I don’t know how they survive it honestly. The stocks for their company went down as well as sm, yg, and jype the day after the announcement. People were wanting to sue hybe that have stock in them for not warning about the break (the guys wanted to tell us themselves rather than some post). People have since calmed down and I believe stock and everything has gone back up but jeez.

Now I feel like I'm having a conversation with you and spamming the comment section 😅, but I can't help it! you're point was too good -- the pressure they are under. The falling stock prices from BTS's announcement led to Korea's National Pension Service to losing over $100 million dollars in investments. SM, JYP and YG (for those unfamiliar, the 3 biggest entertainment companies in SK outside of BTS's own [Hybe]), lost a combined $450 million. Hybe themselves lost $1.7 billion in the market value of their stocks. The New York Times's headline was "BTS Ponders its Future, and SK's economy warily takes note." South. Korea's. economy. 7 men. I can't imagine that level of pressure. Also, I wanted to add that in my above comment I praised their vulnerability and kindness.... then later I realized you're about to react to their School Trilogy....... which contains Cypher's 1-3. So. Yeah. Let me just add they were also full of justified rage. 😂😂🤣🤣🤣 (also, I love their School Trilogy 🔥🔥🔥. I cannot believe how many totally iconic tracks you still have yet to react too!)

The thing about BTS is that their music is already extremely compelling and comforting on its own, but getting too know them as a group, and their relationship dynamics as smaller units + personalities as individuals adds so much context and color to the music :) Glad you were able to see the most searched interview and get a taste of that and i hope you continue to explore that side of them in the future, its a very rewarding, fun and endearing endeavor!

It makes me so happy to see you listen to Muna! They are so good! They opened for Harry Styles on his very first tour. I discovered them through that tour and I've seen them twice since then. You should DEFINITELY listen to more! A couple of my favorite songs are "Loudspeaker" and "Stay away" but you really can't go wrong.

Hailey Lee

I hope Michael reads this because this is so true. The Korean media/industry treated them really badly. But it makes sense why, sadly, but because bts succeeded without the help of these companies, so these companies couldn’t make any money from bts. Thus, they just pushed bts down since it wasn’t benefiting them financially. Politics and money really makes my blood boil.

Stephanie Jensen

Why cant i make the videos work anymore? 😞

Barbi Duarte

Me too o was just about to catch up and all the videos seem to be unavailable

chimelle6

You can’t use the app you have to open it in a web browser. He is working on trying to fix it!

Hey Michael so towards what you were saying about tickets, if you miss a chance to get a BTS ticket I recommend looking for some trusted ARMY group pages. When BTS's Vegas concerts first went on sale the tickets all solded out on the first day, which was release only the the ARMY's who had a BTS yearly membership(If your interested for when BTS go back on tour, it's only like $25-30 a year). I had the membership, but I messed up my registration so I had to wait for the next day. As I mentioned, they sold out that first day so I thought it was over. I'm a part of a Colorado BTS ARMY facebook group and a woman was selling her extra tickets, one of which was going to be right next to her and her daughters. She was selling it at face value and even dropped it a little because we were both from Colorado. It was the best experience!!! They were the nices people, plus she made a custom BTS in Vegas sweater for all of us to were! And I crocheted some little purple whale keychains for her and her two daughters! Also it's risky, but you can wait until much closer to the concert days because scalpers will start to get desperate to sell and drop back to a more reasonable price.

Watching From Nobodies to Legends today of all days had me extra emotional. Last night was their Busan concert, which was 100% free to attend and stream. Seeing how far they've come is almost unbelievable, but they still have the same drive and ideals as day 1. Thank you for another great set of reactions!! (I also adore First Burn, I've probably listened to it more than the original version!!)
