There’s so few good videos of the paparazzi performance. I hope you found one 🖤 gonna keep watching

No joke I would give my first born for a full HD 2009 VMA Paparazzi performance. Please forgive yourself !!! It’s lost footage !!! Just to add to the context, here’s what an American Songwriter article says about it that explains it best. “The whole thing was an elaborate statement on the relationship between paparazzi and celebrities. “I wanted to say something about how the celebrity sort of has this inevitable demise that we love to watch,” Gaga once explained. “But are we killing them or are they killing themselves?””

that paparazzi performance had a huge impact on pop culture at the time. but when u see people who have never seen it before having the same reaction 15 YEARS later? and this track was on her debut album?? idk what to say but iconic might not be enough

Madonna's performance may seem "very demure and mindful" by today's standards, but it was groundbreaking in 1984. It was the first VMAs, and that performance was a make-or-break career moment for her, especially since "Like a Virgin" was then an unreleased song. A woman seductively sliding down a wedding cake, stripping, rolling around, exposing herself, and humping the floor was considered unacceptable behavior back then, just like Elvis pelvic thrusting on TV in the '50s. That's why the shocked audience hesitated to clap at the end. 😂 Her manager told her after she got off stage that her career was over, but ironically that performance was the catalyst for her rise to legend status lol.

idk the vmas always had some of the most iconic performances, even years later talking about them seems relevant. i still remember miley’s “we can’t stop” performance from 2013 with the messy crowd shot of rihanna and the 1D members looking disgusted 😭💀 or britney’s “gimme more” comeback stage in 2007 ..she won the idgaf awards that’s for sure. beyoncé’s “lemonade” medley in 2016 is another one I think about way too often bc it was just so excellent. i’m actually excited for this years show considering megan is hosting and the performances look promising. makes the long run-time worth it I think. and I would love to hear your thoughts after the show regarding performances and overall award winners etc 💕

I feel like Britney Spears "I'm A Slave 4 You", Michael Jackson's 1995 VMA performance (medley of his songs), Janet Jackson's 1993 VMAs "That's The Way Love Goes/If" are among performances missing from this list of most iconic MTV VMAs performances. In my opinion the majority of the best/iconic VMA performances are widely performances from the 1980s - late 2000s. After the late 2000s a lot of the VMA performances are very much hit or miss and the overwhelming majority aren't iconic.

I'm sure I saw most of these live (excpet the 80s Madonna one because I wasn't born yet). I've been watching the vmas since i was a little kid and there have been some great performances over the years and just a lot of huge pop culture moments. It's one of the only award shows i still try to watch live if i can. I have a bias for Taylor so of course I love that performance., but Gaga was on a whole different level with that one. And you're right about the Madonna/Britney/Christina/Missy one. That was all anyone was talking about. And I didn't even remember that that kiss was so quick. Like in my mind they were making out and i think it's because everyone back then was so scandalized by it. Like oh my god women are kissing on tv it's the end of the world. But I think it's so weird that people fixated on the Britney/Madonna kiss and it was on a bunch of magazines but I swear I don't remember anyone caring that Madonna kissed Christina too. But MTV really needs to get their act together and start posting these performances in good quality because they would get enough views to make it worth it. Or at least allow artists to post the videos on their personal channels. It's baffling how many live performances only exist only now because fans have posted them

Am I the only one who thinks it’s a little weird that MTV has this as a category, but nowhere to watch the official performances? In my mind the most iconic performance was Britney’s “I’m a Slave 4 You”. That image of her with the little green top and shorts with the snake around her shoulders was EVERYWHERE. Of these ones though I think I would have to go with Eminem’s “Slim Shady” performance. And yes, it was Carson Daly he shook hands with, right after referencing him in the lyrics. IMO Katy’s was kind of lackluster. Like the setting was cool, but it just didn’t feel very energetic and engaging. Beyoncé’s was pretty iconic, but was a little after the VMA heyday. When I think “iconic VMA performances” I think late 90’s/early 2000’s, but maybe that’s just because that was when I was a teenager. I haven’t looked up who is performing this year, but hopefully there are some good ones! I feel like these days there are some acts who perform really well, but that the caliber of the average live performance has gone downhill.

Don’t forget that Taylor’s 2009 performance was the same year of the Kanye incident. I’m sure we all remember when he interrupted her—while winning an award for the song she just performed!!! I’m not sure if the performance happened before or after the incident, but dang. Either she was riding the high of that performance and then got interrupted on stage, or had to go and do that performance after thinking she’d been booed by her peers.

MTV just upload a clear version of Gaga’s performance on their channel 57 minutes ago. Ahah kinda ironic it was so hard to find and then they upload it out of nowhere 😆

Foxy_Tatty

Hi Michael! Great video once again! Have you ever seen Taylor Swift’s 2019 VMA performance of You Need To Calm Down and Lover? I think that’s an iconic performance 🩷

That paparazzi performance literally gave me nightmares when I first saw it. I would see bloody Gaga hanging from the sky with cameras flashing in my mind alllll the time. That’s how much that performance stuck with me. I wouldn’t be surprised if that one took the award. It was truly the moment where she became a full blown superstar in my eyes.

The Paparazzi performance genuinely altered my brain chemistry as a 9 year old 😭 Her debut album was called The Fame, and it's a commentary on how far people go to become famous and getting swallowed by the industry. Having your first televised award show performance end with you bloody & hanging from the ceiling while people cheer and clap is INSANE, but really drives that point home imo

The Beyoncé performance stands out for me. I love the simplicity of the stage, the Motown style dancers, and the amount of tension she’s able to build with just that and her voice…damn. A knockout. Paparazzi was great but I always felt it was kinda gimmicky even though I loved the album. The Katy Perry one didn’t belong on there. The Madonna one was already a classic (and scandalous) growing up I feel like so it’s hard to compare.

If I had known how lost the media around this time would be, I would have converted a bunch of VHS instead of getting rid of them! I recorded so much stuff back then lol

Gray

It’s hilarious to hear Taylor’s fake country accent now lol

please do a reaction to this years VMA performances!
