It’s just too much effort to try to move. Part of you wonders how the voice could possibly know that.

“Thank you,” the voice says with a smile, “it’s good for you to know that everything I tell you is always true. And now we can truly begin our journey.”

With the slightest of tremors the train begins to move. Out of the corner of your eye you can just glimpse the golden fringe on the velvet window shades quiver. There is the vaguest hum, more a vibration that you feel with your body than a sound you hear with your ears, and it resonates through you, trailing even more lassitude behind it.

Along with the hum, the drug that you ingested (because of course it was a drug) continues to work on your mind and body. You can feel yourself growing warmer and warmer, just like you’re a cat napping in a sunbeam. A profound stillness comes over you, and suddenly you find it very, very difficult to keep your eyes open.

The voice returns.

“You may find as you listen to my voice that your eyelids are becoming heavier and heavier, and that’s perfectly fine. You can let them get as heavy as they need to be. And if you find that they’re so heavy that they just drift closed, that’s perfectly fine, too. And I don’t know if that will happen now or later, or maybe it’s already happened, and your eyes can be completely closed now, so heavy, and so impossible to open again.”

Are your eyes:

  1. Closed?
  2. Closing?
  3. Almost Closed?
  4. Barely Open?
