Ruby was Taeyong's dog, she died a couple of years ago. It's a beautiful song, but so sad, my favourite on the album 😭

Ena

I think for me, Ruby is my pick of the album. I love the song just listening to it, very emotional (it's about his dog that passed, Ruby) and it really showcased Taeyong's talents in an all-rounder kind of way. His singing is soooo good and feels extra special since we don't get to hear it often so I think 404 File Not Found is my second pick. Him and Mark to me are like the pillars of NCT musically and both of their solo projects really reflect the vast musicality that I think makes them so important to the group. Sm really hit the jackpot with them, that's for sure, and I definitely see why they were the picks for superm back when sm was forming their avengers lol.

I listened to all of Taeyong's soundcloud music, and was hoping for a few songs similar to Blue's vibe on this album. On the first listen, as I was going through it all, it was when I hit Ruby that I REALLY started to love the album. Those last three songs.... just amazing. I loved PD's whole rant at the end, Taeyong has never been my bias in NCT (Haechan please go solo), but I've looked forward to his debut and was definitely not disappointed.

Thank you for the listening party! I was really looking forward to this one

Personally, Shalala was a bit TOO neo for me, although i can understand where he was coming from for a title track/performance song, but i agree that it doesn’t quite do justice for the quality of this album. I can’t put into words how much I adore this album and every single b-side - I don’t even have a favourite, I just love them all! I think the fact that it's only his first album and he contributed so much to it makes it even more impressive :)

I HAD BEEN WAITING FOR THIS REACTION SINCE THE ALBUM CAME OUT. We know it's a good one when the album's runtime is only 23.5 minutes and the reaction is over an hour long. I recall two months ago I listened to the album, got whiplash due to how different the rest of the album is compared to Shalala (I just know that Shalala as the title track was a SM decision), and immediately knew that this would be soo hard to top. You hit the nail on the head when you say Taeyong creates beautiful songs. The entire run from Virtual Insanity all the way to Back to the Past is insaneeee. Every single one of them is a piece of art. It's difficult to chose a favorite because they're all so good, but if I really had to, it's Ruby. In case you didn't know, Ruby is the name of Taeyong's dog who passed in 2020. So, knowing that, I was literally brought to tears when I heard it the first time. Even now I consistently get choked up whenever I hear it. The part that hits every time is the chorus. That chorus honestly feels like it just blasted open the roof over my head and I'm suddenly able to see the entirety of the universe all around me. This is something I feel for all of his songs, but even though I don't speak or understand a word of Korean, they feel like they take you on this emotional journey. I think the fact that he isn't shy about singing and the nature of his rap style lends itself well to conveying a sense of sentimentality. Now, let me gush about the Taeyong himself: It really hit me, just the insane amount of talent this man holds, after I fell in love on the first listen through. I wholeheartedly believed (and still do!) that he is the best performer in all of NCT. Any nctzen would know that's a pretty loaded statement to make when you have members like Mark, Ten, Haechan, etc. But, it makes sense with Taeyong. This guy dances like a beast, oozes charisma on stage to a degree that it's intimidating, and developed a rap style that's pretty distinctive to himself. I knew all that before, but it wasn't until his solo debut that I realized, "Holy shit he's also seriously good at writing songs. And all of these songs are, like, a whole ass experience to listen to." Seriously though, Taeyong absolutely deserves being the first neo to get their solo debut. On the subject of Taeyong's image, most fans probably know that he is the one of the best examples of duality out there. He's an absolute badass if you only listen to NCT's music and watch their stages. But if you watch the content, vlogs, and behinds, you'd find that he's legitimately adorable. Fans actually gave him the nickname "Bubu" for how cute he is. Also, he was street-casted and lured into SM by bread. No joke. The recruiter bought him toast, and so Taeyong thought he was nice and agreed to go to SM's audition. We're only able to witness today's Taeyong because of bread. It's actually ridiculous how stacked in talent NCT is, which I bet plays a part in your policy of giving NCT's experimental music a pass to consider the performance in your ratings. A lot of their songs are just meant to be heard live in a concert. You can tell most nctzens already know that judging by the way audiences go absolutely nuts for 2 Baddies and Sticker when NCT 127 was touring. When you have the Neos performing, you know that you're likely going to get something better than the studio recording. I fully believe that Mark will give Taeyong a run for his money when he gets his solo debut, but it's going to be in a completely different direction. Based on Mark's solo releases so far, their styles do not overlap at all. By the way, I don't believe you've checked out his latest NCT Lab release, Golden Hour. [STATION : NCT LAB] MARK 마크 'Golden Hour' MV - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EUsUqd20c_k As for more Taeyong things on YouTube, we got the performance video, studio choom, and dance practice for Shalala. Also live performances of Gwando and Virtual Insanity. - TAEYONG 태용 '샤랄라 (SHALALA)' Performance Video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yTIh8zxeyEM - [BE ORIGINAL] 태용(TAEYONG) '샤랄라 (SHALALA)' (4K) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6gqx07cmF28 - TAEYONG 태용 '샤랄라 (SHALALA)' Dance Practice https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zuEo4ZA7Q3c - TAEYONG 태용 '관둬 (GWANDO)' Live Stage https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g5rAqFLdKgU - TAEYONG 태용 'Virtual Insanity' Live Stage https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NiHpRAeCyeY Just a tiny final note: I'm sure NCT 2023 is on your radar already. But I wanna say Golden Age album is great! Hope I see it on your schedule at some point.

Thank you for this PD. Enjoyed listening with you. and probably my favorite listening party.

I wanted to ask this on a live stream, but I don’t know when and if that is about to happen any time soon. Are there any chances you would check out NCT Lastart? It’s SM’s survival show to create the last NCT unit with new members, the NCT Tokyo. I know you don’t want to get into new survival shows, but each episode has at most one hour and it’s kind of cool, since it is the “last step of NCT’s expansion”

SpacedOut Vy

It's so sad but the best songs on this album (Ruby, 404 and Back to the Past) don't have any live stages. Probably because the vocal layering is so complex

NCT 127 has another series like "Fill it Up" called "Stick Together" for their sticker comeback. You can see some more of Taeyong's personality there! He also has his own YouTube channel with his vlogs. I think other best places to see his personality would be his vlog on him taking his MBTI test: https://youtu.be/Cyx4USqzeYk?si=vY5ADFstYXk5kwHW (8 mins) He has this video called "Definition of TAEYONG" that talks about each song on the album with various behind-the-scenes snippets: https://youtu.be/XiS7_4jErws?si=X0vyALfw0r0pOOwx (13 mins)

2023-08-31 01:13:24 To me Taeyong is an ARTIST in the entire sense of the word. He LIVES art in so many ways, he needs to express himself and paint a story with his music but he also complements it in so many ways. This album he decided to tell a story of the things that took him to who he is now and he's already working on his second album which im sure will tell a different story with the same amount of beauty as this one (if not more because he keeps outdoing himself). He is so raw and honest and never does it for the charts, he just wants to create and share it with others. Also I think Mark and Taeyong are incredibly different but they complement eachother so well. I don't think Marks solo will be anything like what Taeyong does but it will be amazing in its own way. The things that I can see being similar is that they are both very open and love singing and rapping but the actual stuff they make is very different which is very fun for me to enjoy! Thank you for this amazing reaction <3

I enjoyed this listening party so much! Thank you!! I think you both might enjoy his definition video for the album. He went into detail about the thought process behind each song, how it all came about, inspiration etc. Definition of TAEYONG| ‘SHALALA - The 1st Mini Album’: https://youtu.be/XiS7_4jErws?feature=shared

Hey pd, nct 127 has a documentary on disney+ called “the lost boys”, where they talk about their struggle. It would be great if you can check it out

WiseSmellyLegs

I wasn’t expecting you to like and appreciate TaeYong as a rapper this much! I really hope Shalala and TaeYong’s discography in general will not meet the same fate as G-Dragon’s Heartbreaker… 😅😅 Like that another releases wouldn’t live up to that level Regarding you mentioning Mark’s solo at the end. Well, SM announced Ten’s mini album for this year, but sooner or later they will give Mark his solo as well. So it’s coming… maybe not soon, but it’s somewhere in the future already happening 😎😎

Thank you for doing thus listening party, I was waiting since the release of the album for your reaction to it. And yes, it's actually Taeyong on the high note on Virtual Insanity 😂 he can reach pretty high (Doyoung's level of high https://vm.tiktok.com/ZMjNak6Wa/ ) but he says that it actually strains his voice a lot since he doesn't has yet the enough vocal training/practice to that. He's been taking more vocal oriented lessons since SuperM and it shows! I recommend also this program he was at (https://youtu.be/TMyiq1gDBbU?si=avsUV4HtSV9k-M94) it has a shalala live ver., a chet baker cover (yes, you read correctly) and a song that he created during this sesión with the host 😊

i’ve watched this reaction 3 times so far and it’s my absolute favorite :) taeyong is my ult and it makes me so happy to see you guys appreciate him as an artist. he has an incredible range and is so versatile. he’s currently working on his 2nd solo album and i’m so excited for all of us to experience what he has in store next!!

if you love this album, i think you should watch "Definition of TAEYONG" that talks about each song on the album: https://youtu.be/XiS7_4jErws?si=X0vyALfw0r0pOOwx (13 mins)

This reaction was so special and it was truly magical to see you fall so much for Taeyong and his art. He's truly a surprising individual. It's also been months and I can't really listen to Ruby without tears coming to my eyes or like Gwando without feeling so comforted. It's really an amazing assortment of songs. Random but from what you said about your likes and dislikes it really seems like you would love Mino's solo stuff, especially Take, in particular the deeper songs, it just really seems like your style of rap. Or maybe you tried and his flow wasn't your thing, idk, just thinking outloud here.

I'm so glad you guys agreed with my personal choice (in my head ofc lamo). I felt like it's such a waste that Taeyong hadn't had 404 or Gwando (Gwando, because it has a very korean sound and would do much better in Korea than Shalala) as his title track, because they would have been such better indicators of the masterpiece that this album actually was.

hi pd! it's my first time commenting here hehe i just joined your patreon very recently but i've actually been following u for a while on youtube now (since 2018, if i'm not mistaken) i really hope you'll get to see this comment somehow cause i actually have something interesting i wanted to share with you!! it's just an idea that popped out in my head all of a sudden while i was watching this video and it's about taeyong and all the songs he released on soundcloud. as u were mentioning that u have checked out taeyong's soundcloud songs before, i couldn't help but decided to take a quick pause to this video and immediately open my soundcloud app and start listening to every single one of them (it's been a long while since i listened to those songs). for a very long time, like even before he debuted as a soloist with his shalala album, these songs he put on soundcloud have brought me such a great feeling of comfort, like he basically healed me yk... he makes me feel better, he makes me feel confident about myself, he makes me want to become a better person, he makes me feel a lot of things. even till now, every time i listen to his songs, i still feel seen, i still feel heard, i still feel safe, it's so crazy. i have never resonated with any singers like this before, not until i met taeyong. he really is such an amazing artist, singer, songwriter, producer or whatever u wanna call him. his existence alone blows my mind tbh (yes, i'm a big simp for him) (have been like this since 2018 and no i don't feel ashamed at all) (sorry for ranting though). i think what i really wanted to share with you is that since u are currently set on the journey of trying to become a better person, i would suggest u to maybe take some time to revisit taeyong's soundcloud songs cause i believe each of them will bring u exactly what u need rn. let it be comfort, healing, happiness, excitement, or like when u need some good emotional songs to clear all your negative thoughts out, try listening to his songs on soundcloud. in my opinion, the best way to do it is to listen to all of them in the ascending order of released date (starting with dark clouds until fine). it works pretty well for me every time i feel like there are too many things occupying my mind so yeah just a small suggestion for u! and maybeeee after doing it, u can make a post and leave a review about whether it worked for u or not, orrrr if u want to film a video while listening to his songs, it'd be good too hehe. no pressure though! pls take this as lightly as possible! love you, hope everything goes well for both u and blaire in the future!

omg so sorry for the long message i didnt know i have typed that long...
