I didnt know you dont watch bts variety stuff. If theres a slot in the schedule, i think it would be fun for you to check out some of the legendary run bts episodes, like 3-5 of them, because these dudes are hilarious

emotionless bot

i don’t think K was looking down at the ground when he said that but yeah i totally get what you’re saying :-( He first said that, “the way the National Producers think is different from how WE think.” implying that the people that national producers picked haven’t been a scary strong contender and the trainees knew that. That’s the rule, right? If you didn’t manage to get the attention of the show producers and the trainees you would end up in Ground. The people who’s constantly been on I-Land (Heeseung and K) and managed to defend their spot for the whole show would understandably feel iffy and anxious about how a Ground member managed to rank above them, not just above them, but first place. They know they’re talented. That’s why they always want to get judge by the show producers themselves not the viewers. Let’s be honest, the voters would always be biased and it sucks. It’s a shame that the strong contenders are the ones that gets anxious the most with votes when with actual talents alone, they deserved a spot (Jay, K, Heeseung) A person climbing up the spot is such an amazing and heartwarming story that people tend to downplay the struggles of a person in the top fighting to keep his deserved spot. It’s honestly harder to defend your spot at the top than to climb up the spot.

I wonder if your posting 8 today's as well I'm just so excited for the performances!!

Kim Chaewon

Welcome back PD! Will we be getting ep 8 as well or is that end of this week?

Malaki.H

Also I really recommend checking out bts variety they are so fun and entertaining 💜!!

eli_nhdoaek

Rain and Zico are only producers for Part 1! Zico enlisted after part 1 and rain was busy with SSAK3 and his comeback! I like this first ep for part 2 because it was like a breather before all hell breaks loose again 😂. Also part 2 is waaaaay better than part 1 so i’m excited!

Actually PD, Taki and Niki are the same age with Taki being a few months older than Niki if you can believe it! Taki was born in May of 2005 and Niki was born in December of 2005

DreamyStateOfMind

"Pretty sure this is how the Vision was born" omg Pd 🙄😂

It’s really interesting to watch and reminisce about the time I-land was coming out. PD was very surprised with the results of ranking, but at that time it was really predictable — public adores lovable outsiders, and Sunoo and Daniel were the prime examples. Sunoo just looks and acts like someone who was born to be an idol, every single viewer saw it. He also was one of the first applicants we saw in the first episode and also got voted out twice, that cranked up the sympathy to the max. Daniel also got voted to the Ground when he got a high score, and he’s also the youngest on the show and Korean-American. Overall, both checked almost all points to get a lot of votes from viewers. After all, at first we had an opportunity to vote for a lot of trainees, like 6 or something — we could be generous. The thing with attractiveness and beauty, I think, while depends a lot on personal preferences and cultural background, can be also be defined in static and dynamic. Beauty is static, it is a ratio, it is a bone structure and skin and the slant of eyes, it’s a bit mathematic in nature. But attractiveness is dynamic, it truly shows on videos, in the mimic, in the posture, in the tone. I think, it can be seen in the show too. Sunghoon is beautiful, he has the Korean beauty standards face, he brings a lot of people in the fandom on this alone. The same with Jake — it’s not that obvious, but when the show came out, a lot of western fans started to watch it just because of him, he is the most handsome by the western standards. But who is the most memorable in the MV, who people instantly remember? Jay. And while he can’t be considered ugly, his features are more unconventional — most of the time when he’s not groomed by a team of stylists or himself, he looks borderline awkward. But he is attractive, he keeps viewer’s attention.

BTS variety shows are literally THE funniest :)

BaoziBang

Just so you know, Taki is like more than 6 Months older than Niki. Niki's Birthday is in Dec 2005 which makes him only 3 months older than Daniel.

BaoziBang

Also, if you want to know BTS better I recommend either Bon Voyage or In The Soop instead of BTS RUN. While I enjoy the games they play on Run I think you would have a lot of fun to see them travel basically without managers or squirreled away in the mountains doing what they want. Also, a lot less episodes, especially In the Soop.

Christian Oettl

Zico was enlisting around the time this aired (also around the same time BigHit aquired KOZ) and Rain wasn't part either. But there are other guests like in this episode.

One thing I wanted to point out about the way the viewers were voting is that it was through Weverse and they had the latest fancam of every contestant so you could see clearly their dance, their facial expressions and every little detail even if they weren't in the center.

SanjA1800

This episode, actually this whole series provides an interesting look at human behaviour, talent vs popularity and idol culture. There is soo much to talk about. First of all what you said about human nature and classism but also as one of the other patreons mentioned while every one roots for the underdog and the rags to riches stories we also forget about the people who have rightfully secured their place at the top solely through hard work and skills so of course, they will feel that its unfair that people outranked them through popularity. But then there is an argument to be made that popularity is also a kind of skill/talent. And then there is the leadership thing. Taki is young and not up to the leadership position but then so is Niki (Niki is a few months younger if I'm not mistaken) and the kid led the Grounder team so well in part 1. The leadership title was thrust upon him but he took to it so well. Its all soo interesting.

Catrin

I think to me the difference between handsomeness and attractiveness is that you can tell someone is handsome from just a photograph. I think attractiveness is judged, in my mind at least, more in where your gaze is drawn and who your eye settles on. To me, I can't tell if someone is attractive through a still image, because so much of it is personality and charisma, and how well the person can translate both of those things into what they do.

mssmercedes

PD at the beginning of the episode: wow this is going to be a long one get some snacks. PD at the end: it's over already!?

Dia

This episode should be called PD Roasting I-lander Haircuts haha.

Harley

Now that I think of it Jungkook and Taehyung don’t normally talk a lot outside of original BTS content but they are both equally fascinating people. I’m curious for you to see how they act on stage vs off stage because they both have such duality it’s funny to watch people’s reactions

Kpop_Platypus

Me: it bugs me when they don't get the badge perfectly aligned w/ the logo. PD: Ack! His badge doesn't match up w/ the logo. I think BTOB'S Eunkwang is a perfect example of the attractiveness argument. This isn't a diss at all, but he's not "traditionally handsome;" he is, however, very attractive as a performer & a person. Alexa's the best example of how to transition from being a cover dancer to an actual idol. Woman #WORKS & you can tell it just listening to her on her podcast w/ Jae. Excited for Friday's episode!

M.C.

- I think Sunoo ranking 1 here makes sense if you think about the previous episodes. He was one of the few that kept going back and forth between Iland and Ground. I remember being really upset and questioning why the ilanders kept voting him out at the time and I remember seeing people on Twitter reacting the same way. From the audience's point of view, the ilanders kept voting him out and then the judges would vote him back in so it would seem unfair. Sunoo and Daniel also got spotlighted because of the Save Me performance. I think it also makes sense for Daniel and Sunoo to have more votes then the ilanders because after people knew who'd be staying, you'd vote for people who were in danger of being eliminated.

Samm Kayy

Im not saying you have to react to this rn with all the stuff on your plate, but it would be a great idea to watch bts in the soop, or any bon voyage. You really get to see their real personalities and how close they are. Id recommend in the soop first since its the latest one.

Idon'tknow

Lol. I just wanted to add that ta-ki is a few months older than ni-ki.

formoftherapy

LITERALLY all I know of Jungkook is just always standing or sitting there WIDE EYED like a freaking puppy dog just excited to be there. NEVER or RARELY talks.

JustCakie

Taki is older than Ni-ki but I understand what you mean. Taki has an innocent creativity where as Ni-ki and K tend to be a little more serious. During I-Land anyway

Diana

Lol, I know right? It can be easy to forget. Even me, watching I-Land I always just felt Taki was the baby without realizing he and Niki are the same age, and that he's older than Daniel. He just feels the most child-like, while the other two have a different sort of maturity to them

its interesting that you mention you could tell Bang PD likes Heeseung. It was a running joke while the show was airing that Heeseung was his favourite. There was an episode which only a select few viewers got to watch which showed more of the conversation that happened at the start of this episode when each of the final 12 was revealed. Heeseungs one was interesting because you could tell the relationship he has with the staff from big hit because they were all joking around and teasing him. Bang PD was teasing him about how he was sad when Heeseung told him he wanted to focus more on his singing than rapping (according to Bang PD, he's a really good rapper). It was really interesting to see the relationship that he actually has with the staff from Big Hit

希文 王

Interesting to hear your take on Hanbin's concerns! Never really thought about it, but it makes sense (what you said), and I agree. And don't know if you'd be interested or have the time, but it would be nice to see you watch BTS's variety, though their own variety show (Run! BTS) has a lot of episodes, if you ever want to I'm sure lots of us could give you recommendations for which episodes to do a test view!

Leen

Episode 8 please😭 im actually Watching it for the first time with you so im dying to know what will happen

Ena

I mean i can understand where K is coming from with his distaste towards the rankings. Like as you said, there is prejudice against the grounders now but I also think it's because there are a lot of members who have shown more than Daniel and Sunoo. Even when the rankings were first announced we all knew that Daniel and Sunoo were some of the weak links out of the top 7 and we were all surprised they got the highest two. It all comes down to popularity at the end of the day and I guess K kind of got a reality check on the fact that being an idol isn't just related to the best skills but also charisma and fan appeal.

Diana

I agree. On one side, I get that it must have been so frustrating for him. But on the other...as PD has said, it is yet another aspect of the skill set for being an idol. Being charismatic and liked by the audience is also a skill of sorts, and none of us can deny Sunoo was always pretty darn good at it (he was also shown a lot for the "official cut", so there's that too). One of the things I like best from Part 2 is that it's a lot more dynamic in both the interactions between the participants but also their concerns for the performances. The way they were preparing and polishing every stage was truly different from the bunch of kids dancing together in Part 1 and felt more grown and mature.

Not to upset K stans or anything as I liked K in part one but I think the nature of the second part of competition really got to him and showed a really dark side to him, maybe it was villian editing but I really didn’t like k’s thought process and how he acted throughout the second part, I do get the frustration of working hard, being at the top and being told you’re great and 2 people coming up in 1st and second out of nowhere can be uncomfortable but surely they knew of the global aspect part of the show and that while skills and talent matter, personality are big traits that people look more onto. I’m trying to see it through a ilander perspective but if sunoo was a bubbly happy person all the time during the show I would think he is just as big of competition as K. There are groups out there that have members who absolutely struggle with dancing or have no lines but have the biggest personality, charms, cuteness, charisma all of it, abit like Niki, Hes a fantastic dancer, average singer and has great charisma, you barely see/hear any lines from him or They are basic but he makes up for it with his power and then his young child self personality that everyone loves. I’m trying not to be too hard on the contestants cause we only see so much but the death glare from k and him saying those things just didn’t sit right with me

Aurayaya

Are we getting Ep. 8 too? Can't wait x)

Briana

To me, attractiveness is all about personal opinion and preference and goes beyond looks. Personality plays a factor also. So while I think a lot of idols are very handsome or cute or hot, I only find a really small amount attractive.

Samantha

Okay but on the conversation about cover dancers not really getting what the actual industry fully expects of their performers and eventual idols: THANK GOD SOMEONE ELSE FINALLY SAID IT! Sometimes I really feel like all the kpop stans and even just fans on the outside of the whole fandom culture mess really don't seem to get what you have to do when you get into a performance/arts based industry. It's often 12-16 hour days (yes, it's illegal when those are mandatory hours but when you as a worker volunteer that time in it's technically not) with your entire life and personal schedule revolving around the job you're trying to get. For example, I'm someone who works/performs in live theatre. I work in whatever capacity I can get a job in because I was someone who put in my hours in college doing literally every facet of theatre that I could fit into my schedule. So now, I can professionally work as a performer (actor, singer, dancer, extra, etc.), with lighting and sound, building and tearing down sets, building and designing costumes and makeup, wig making, and directing. Of course I focused in on my personal goals but I also knew that in order to actually get into the industry, I needed to be good at literally anything the ppl hiring needed me to be good in. The same goes for the kpop industry. You can't just be good at one thing anymore. We're seeing more and more idols debuting who excel at singing, rapping, and dancing as well as dipping their toes into things like composing, writing lyrics, choreographing, and even learning multiple languages (see Jay now trying to learn his 4th language at the moment just because he wants to lol). You need to put in W O R K to make a space for yourself as a professional in that industry. Just because you can do what others have done before you doesn't make you stand out when you actually get into the first steps of the space that is the megamachine of kpop. You need to be able to do what no one else in that company can do. It's a bit of that idol-vibe you talked about earlier. There has to just be something there that you have worked at and grown into to make you an idol, not just a performer. Like I absolutely call myself a performer but I'd DEFINITELY never make it as an idol (and not just cause I'm a dime a dozen basic white bitch lmaoooooooooooo!!!).

watching this (while knowing who is in enhypen and which people get eliminated when ) is so freaking entertaining god damn PD figuring out who will be in the top 7 is like that pepe silva meme from always sunny lmao

Don't call me.

Sunghoon gives me similar vibes to minho (skz). Just less tsundere.

When are new episodes posted?

Karina Kim

I can’t find the new episodes they’re not supposed to be posted today?

Just so you know taki is older than niki

Jess

poor taki lol he has such a baby face that he's talked about like he's way younger than niki when he's actually older and I feel like a jerk for laughing at that... I'm not gonna lie though I was not really rooting for k in iland at all because while I felt that he was really talented, I also kinda felt like his talents and specialties overlap with the other contestants a lot. there is always someone that does it just slightly better for me though. he's almost an ace but heeseung is a slightly better ace, he's almost the best dancer except for niki, he never really showed any type of personality that really made me like him, and there were several members that I thought had better vocals. I don't know, I kinda felt like k would kinda be wasted and wasn't really a good fit for the final lineup based on what I knew from iland. P.s. I'm really not trying to hate on k, it was just my opinion at the time please no one get mad at me

Anonymous

I was really rooting for K but I don't think K was the right fit for Enhypen compared to the members that got in even though I was devastated at the time that he didn't and his talents might go to waste. but now that I know he's debuting I can think a bit more clearly and know that he most definitely will do better on his own group with the rest.

Jennifer Hiltz

PD, I just wanted to thank you for all your little words of wisdom about confidence and charisma getting you far in life. I've been nervous about a big change in my own life and hearing these tidbits of advice have really been helpful in reassuring me about me decision.

Dharling

The fact that you have absolutly no doubt that Ni-ki is going to make it, makes me so happy!!!! Even though you didn't remember him being in the group like Heeseung, Jungwon and Jay

Janine

I agree with you, I also think that’s why people were upset at Ni-Ki a lot during the first part of the season especially during the fire test when he was pushing the grounders and frustrated with them. He understands how much work you have to put in regardless of how your body is feeling. I’m not saying it should happen regardless but Ni-Ki was leading by standards he knows are held in the industry.

Lisa H

the work ethic in the kpop industry (and korea in general) is admirable and a bit scary lol. but my unpopular opinion/bad take is that I think its completely worth it for the reward, career, and money made in kpop if the group gets successful. i think the western music industry would be a lot more interesting if they took a few notes from kpop.
