In my opinion the 2 first episodes are the weakest in the series. I know you're concerned about the cultural appropriation aspect, but I think you will like how the show progresses. These performers show many more colors as they interact with each other than they do in these first performances. I'd love it if you stuck with this show, and I don't think you'll regret it if you do.

I totally agree with your statement about Jamie. As an African American it is very cringey to watch. You can tell she is faking it and just trying to I feel be someone else and she’s approaching it wrong. And I get the BM example as well that is something you just cannot fake.

BaoziBang

It's interesting that you feel this Way. Because I followed her since debut and her behavior changed mostly because of her friends in my Opinion not anything else. Also... I don't know how to say this without being rude or something because English is like my 3rd language so please tell me if what I say sounds bad... I feel like Jamie gets so much Hate because she's a Girl. There are like 100 Male Artists in Korea that are a lot worse and get a lot less shit because of it. That doesn't mean I think it's great, it's just what I have seen. Idk... For me she just sounds someone that learned English from her Rapper Friends and Media. Many People I know tend to sound like that before they diversify the English media they consume or actually visit somewhere that mostly speaks English. I think I sometimes do the same. I learned English by myself and sometimes use certain slang totally normally because I don't know any other word for what I mean. Idk...

Well, this was an interesting watch. I like that you tell it as you see it and I do see where you're coming from. I don't know how much of some of these people's personas, gestures etc are intentional and how much is subconscious. And that's why it's so hard to know where the line should be drawn. Also, the show's setup doesn't help either. While the participants are from different backgrounds there is a heavy inclination towards rap and unfortunately, that's the genre where you see the most wannabes. So going forward you mayyy see a lot of cringey poser vibes from the contestants or the people they are gonna compete with. But that being said I still hope you'll stick it out because the girls are all talented and there are some gems. It's only the first round of performances and it's not fair to judge any of them based on just this. There mayyy be some surprises and there will definitely be a lot to discuss.

I agree with your take on Jamie, I've had the same thoughts for a while now. Nothing against Ailee either but when she's with Jamie in the show it kind of rubs me the wrong way vs how Ailee usually acts by herself (which is normal). I think how she acts now is a big product from feeling confined in JYP though, like I remember her saying somewhere in the past that she never had any schedules and all she wanted to do was literally sing. The other half of 15&, Baek Yerin has established herself as a soloist and the gp love her. I can tell Jamie wants the same success and is trying to stand out by acting with this persona. Like I know she's trying to show a different image from her jyp days and be freer, but yeah nobody who especially hasn't grown up in America acts this way and doesn't come across as offensive. Zico being a prime example of too much and too problematic. Also, personally, I stopped watching the show at the this exact episode because of the cringe and I just found some things uncomfortable so It's completely understandable if you decide not to continue.

The crazy thing about you saying Queen Wasabi is smart, she has a BA in Education and worked as an Ethics teacher lol.

Yan J.

yea I felt the same was as you did PD on these first few episodes, but once the show gets started vs other contestants it's way better. I hope you continue watching

Zelbinion

I really hope you decide to keep going with this series. I think the personal growth the members experience throughout the show (especially Sleeq and Yeeun) is one of the best parts about it. The later performances, when they start being less individuals and more of a team, allow them to show some unexpected sides of themselves. One thing I would mention is I think the "next episode" stuff spoils way too much, like who they're facing and what some of the performances are like, so maybe skip those in the future if you want to be surprised.

Yanan

It's like any competition show. It doesn't get interesting until after the self-introductions are done.

EJ

When It comes to k hip hop I usually only listen to the members in highr music (ph-1,sik k, haon, jay park, etc). They make some dope music without all that appropriating. I enjoy your reaction tho 🤙

Honestly I'm with you PD. I felt so bad for Sleeq (and I'm hoping it gets better in the next episode) especially when Hyoyeon kind of just refuses to cooperate and shoots down everything Sleeq suggests. I get not wanting to be in a team, but at least make an effort. (I'm also guessing the editing has to do with this, but :\) And the cultural thing...I think it's a very long journey, and it's very hard to erase. Especially with people like Jamie, the kind of aura she projects is hard to point out as appropriating to them when they just don't get it.

jimmirakeul

the first 2 episodes were boring to me but it got better in ep 3 and more. i hope you keep on watching it

Rohsyeons

I completely understand how you feel, but i do hope you continue this show, there are some stellar performances here that I think are definitely worthwhile and I think that, you get more out of it when you see the processes of the performances coming together and some of the setbacks they've had to go through such as someone having an allergic reaction before a stage and etc. If you choose not to keep watching it, I respect that, but I do hope you at least watch the performances

hayun lee

i agree with you on the jamie thing, i was a fan of her since kpop star and after she befriended rappers she completely changed her way of talking and the way she presents herself. you can tell its not natural, she even had a slight british accent (a british international school in thailand) so it seems disingenuous and like shes putting on a mocking caricature of what she believes black culture to be.

Irene K

About Hyoyeon. Everything you saw were teribly edited and you'll get it in the next episode. They edited their interaction to seem that way when actually the got along pretty good very fast. Just wait until the next episode

Anna Rolek

I really appreciate your honesty and that's why I like your channel. I think it's important. That being said I am beginning to regret my statement about really liking Queen Wasabi. I watched the performances without subtitles and I don't speak Korean. It's a whole other ballgame when they're on. Those lyrics in the Macreno song were not good. I need to go rethink some things

Marcake

This is the episode where i stopped watching the show. It's so boring and cringey for my taste. I just watched the performance clips after this. Although Sleeq and Yeeun really stood out in this show with the way they developed as artists. Yeeun really diversified her image from a mere girl group rapper without any ambition to a full package versatile artist. Her growth was insane. It it's too much for you to watch it, i'd recommend just watching the performances in order instead.

Annemc022

I watched the entire show and i completely understand your point, If you don’t want to continue, I would suggest you just react to the performances, maybe like a sort of marathon of all of them? Most of them are so good

Chau Nguyen

If you do watch the performances, you will not regret Mimi and Yooa’s Checkmate performance. I know they only guested but that blew me away.
