Kelly’s head was spinning. “Yeah, I know,” she said in a low voice. She looked around to make sure nobody was overhearing her as she sighed. “But I don’t want to get between them. It’s actually normal. I totally get it.” She looked over her shoulder again to make sure nobody was eavesdropping. “They’re like a real couple too. I can’t be mad.”

“What if he planned it from the very beginning?” Vanessa asked. She was Kelly’s teammate for years, and after learning about Blake’s relationship with Lewis, Kelly was trying hard not to have people spread too many rumors. “It’s already sketchy that we know who he was before.”

“That’s just the thing. She’s a girl now. Even the commission was fine when they did their investigation. And even if my stepdad did plan it from the beginning, I saw the papers he wrote. Blake’s mind hasn’t been altered in any way. He’s … she’s naturally drawn to him.”

“Still, Blake’s basically about to become your stepmom. Don’t you find that a little weird?”

Kelly sighed again before looking over her shoulder. She was at the local coffee shop with Blake and her stepdad when she received text messages and a missed call from Vanessa. She had previously excused herself to talk to her teammate, but now she felt horrible for how she also felt about her stepdad’s new relationship.

The air around them had an aura of newfound contentment, of a joy that was pure and untainted while they talked to each other alone. Kelly, standing a little away, felt a myriad of emotions play within her heart as she watched her stepfather and Blake.

“At first I did,” she said. “I still feel a little weird. But I’ve come to accept it. He’s a guy, and Blake’s a girl. They both have needs. I get it.”

“If you say so … but talk to me if things get worse, okay?”

“Yeah, I’ll be fine,” she said. “Please don’t spread this around, though. Not until after the wedding. I don’t want the team to go up in flames when they realize that Blake’s fucking my dad.”

“I promise,” Vanessa said. But Kelly knew all too well that she was going to spread gossip around. The team was ruthless when it came to rumors. Sadly, the best Kelly could do was be as truthful as possible to lessen the blow while she sighed again. “I’ll talk to you later, Kelly.”

Kelly hung up the phone to rejoin her stepdad and Blake. She couldn't comprehend fully what was transpiring in front of her eyes, but the sight of them, so happy and content, put a sincere smile on her face. Blake was only supposed to be a girl for a temporary period of time. After the soccer season came to an end and she discovered their secret relationship, she was filled with outrage.

Yet seeing her stepfather find happiness again warmed her heart. He was a man who had lived in the shadows of loneliness since her mother's death. Lewis had lived in solitude, his world painted in shades of gray in his pathetic lab. But now, Blake, with his infectious energy and loving nature, had brought color back into Lewis’s life. Kelly could see it as she joined them to talk about their wedding plans together.
