Cassandra felt only a little annoyed that she had to slow down a little on her job. She could usually push herself hard. After all, she was getting ready for Cassandra’s hand gently patted her face, a refreshing coolness seeping through her skin after a long jog with her roommate Kyra.

The air was crisp and light, but Kyra seemed to be gasping for every breath. Her form was hunched over, and a sheen of sweat painted her chubby features. Cassandra, aware of her roommate's struggle, felt a slight pang of sadness as she remembered the girl Kyra used to be.

“Fuck…”

“You good?” Cassandra asked.

“Yeah, I’m good,” Kyra panted. “Sorry, I’m just not used to feeling this way. I feel like I stopped at least four times, but I shouldn’t be too hard on myself. It’s my first real run. I was only doing a bit of walking around before they let me out. Besides, no pain, no gain, right?”

“You probably shouldn’t push yourself this early,” Cassandra told her roommate. “You haven’t even had that body for that long. Are you sure you’re really allowed to be doing this much physical activity?”

“They monitored everything, so they said I’d be good. Obviously, I can’t push myself like I used to … not yet.”

“Well, slow down, because I think you’re getting a rash.”

Cassandra did her best to sound like she cared a lot more than she did. The more she stared at Kyra, she also felt a little good that her roommate was struggling so much. Deep down, Cassandra had always been jealous of her friend.

She had the perfect body and never had to worry about calories. Kyra had been a beacon of athleticism, her red hair like a fiery emblem of her spirited energy that attracted all sorts of attention. Cassandra, despite being in good shape too, always felt out of shape compared to her roommate.

She actually couldn’t believe her roommate wanted to voluntarily give up her body. She wasn’t sure about the specifics, but she knew she did it at a legitimate facility with a mutual participant. But when Cassandra picked Kyra up at the facility, she was shocked at the body she had picked out for herself. She was a heavier blonde girl who looked way too out of shape.

Sure, the decision to swap bodies had been voluntary, but Cassandra wondered if Kyra had truly understood the repercussions. Still, she kept her laughter and mouth shut, wondering if all of this was going to get reversed or if Kyra had just wanted this for a challenge. She had always complained about how she was repeatedly plateauing in her current body, though Cassandra could never understand her point of view.

Now, finally returning to their home after their run, Cassandra observed Kyra closely. She laughed silently to herself when she saw the sweaty girl further struggle. Every bend seemed like a lot of work. The ease and grace that had once defined Kyra seemed like a distant dream, replaced by labored breaths and strained steps. The sight of all of this made Cassandra hope that the vibrant, athletic Kyra would never return.
