When Gillian, a fellow classmate, told Mary about the girl her ex-boyfriend was dating, she didn’t think much of it. Breaking up with him formally was the best decision of her life. She felt so much better knowing that she could finally walk around without constantly thinking about him. She hated guys like him. Sure, he was incredibly nice to her during their relationship, but going behind her back and seeing other women made her feel disgusted. She was exclusive to him, yet he didn’t reciprocate the same amount of exclusivity.

But now, she couldn’t believe what she was seeing. “I can’t fucking believe this,” Mary whispered as she sat on her couch. She was scrolling through her social media feed in complete silence. The room was dimly lit, with only the soft glow of her phone screen illuminating her face.

She absentmindedly clicked on various posts, her mind lost in angry thought while she uncovered. She had been worried about her brother, Ben, who had recently moved out without telling anyone where he was going or what he was doing with his life. His silence had left Mary both hurt and concerned.

As she continued scrolling, her heart skipped a beat when she saw photographs of her ex-boyfriend, Tom. The sight of him brought back a whirlwind of memories, and she couldn't help but feel a pang of jealousy. However, it wasn't Tom's presence in the photos that caught her off guard, but rather the woman he was with—a woman who looked eerily familiar.

Mary stared at the images, her mind racing as she tried to make sense of what she was seeing. She scrutinized the woman's face, her heart pounding as she began to piece together the truth. This woman bore a striking resemblance to her brother, Ben. The same eyes, the same smile—there was no denying it. Ben had transitioned into a woman, and he was now dating her ex-boyfriend.

A mix of emotions washed over Mary as she tried to process this new information. Anger bubbled up inside her, not only at her brother's secrecy but also at the fact that he was now romantically involved with her former love. She felt betrayed, abandoned, and utterly bewildered.

Despite the rising anger, a part of her couldn't help but be impressed by her brother's transformation. The woman in the photographs was undeniably beautiful. She learned that he was going by the name “Bonnie” and was going to be marrying Tom later in the year.

The worst thing about it all was that Mary had indirectly allowed all of this to happen. From helping him adapt to his female body to directing him to chase after Tom, Mary’s distrust led to her losing a brother and gaining a distant sister.

Mary's thoughts spiraled, her emotions a tangled knot that she couldn't seem to untie. Bonnie had permanently become a woman, and the thought of losing her brother made her cry. They had always been close, and the idea that her brother had been hiding such a significant part of his life from her was almost too much to bear.
