“You know magic isn’t real, right?” Brian asked impatiently while his friend closed his bedroom door. Earlier, Xavier had stumbled upon an old spell book while browsing an antique shop with Brian. Intrigued by a mysterious book, he decided to purchase it and bring it home.

Brian thought it was the dumbest thing, but Xavier thought it looked intriguing. Even the elderly cashier seemed interested in whether or not the spells worked. Now that they were alone back at Xavier’s apartment, he eagerly opened the book and began to flip through its pages, reading the various spells and incantations while Brian rolled his eyes again. “You spent over two hundred dollars for that. The old lady was faking her enthusiasm, you know.”

“Most of it’s a journal. Even if this isn’t real, you do realize that I can resell this, right? People love antique stuff online. There’s artwork and writing that dates as far back as the 1400s. This is a piece of history.”

“It’s a piece of your paycheck,” Brian laughed as he sat on the bed. Xavier simply ignored his extra remarks and continued to read through seemingly endless journal entries. The cool thing about the journal was that there were spells and recipes in each one. All he had to do was read deeply into the entry, though some of the incantations were in another alphabet that he didn’t recognize. Some words he actually could read, which he’d whisper to himself. Brian rolled his eyes again and said something, but Xavier was enthralled by the day to day stories that the writer had made. “Alright, well, I’m going home. You have fun with your book.”

“I’m almost done,” he insisted. But Brian was already out the door. “What a fucking asshole.” He shook his head and continued reading. They were both history majors, yet it felt like Xavier was more interested in history than his friend was. But the more he read through the words, the more he felt a little off. There was a strange sensation washing over him once he got to a particular part of the book. Then, his words echoed back in his head, and he felt his head beginning to spin. “I … Brian?” Suddenly, everything went black as he fell backwards, and he felt as though he was falling through a dream-like void.

A strange heat rippled through his chest. It stretched along his arms and legs, and he felt his mouth opening up in his dream. Something was moving into his mouth and down his throat. It was a mushy feeling that felt painless until the heat began to intensify. Suddenly, standing in front of him was a slender woman with long dark hair and brown eyes. Her gorgeous smile pierced him as she stepped closer to him. Her tight white dress flowed in the wind behind her as she moaned softly into his ear.
