Nathan was an old man who was sick and dying from multiple illnesses. His only request to his family was that they bring him specific books from his library. His grandson, Samuel, agreed and brought him the textbooks he'd accrued over the years.

He asked his friend Bethany for help since there were too many books for one person, and when they'd done what the old man wanted, Nathan asked them to leave. But just before they could get out of the hospital room, Nathan whispered something to Bethany, and a chill ran down her neck.

She couldn't remember exactly what he said but knew that she had heard him say "the end is coming." She looked at Samuel, who shook his head as if saying 'I don't know.' Bethany ended up going home, only to realize in horror that something was crawling inside her chest. It tickled and throbbed uncomfortably while she felt her tummy starting to quiver. She ran to the washroom to wash her mouth, only to realize that she was losing control of her body.

A wicked smile stretched across her face as she stared into the mirror. "I was really hoping to have Samuel's body," her lips said. "It's such a shame that I'm not compatible with him. My soul literally bounced off him and landed against you. Well … being a woman wasn't something I wanted to do, but I guess I could get used to this." Her hands grasped her hips while her body swayed back and forth. "Yeah, sorry, Bethany. I really wasn't planning on possessing you with my spell books. I really wanted to be a guy for my next life. But now that I'm already here, it looks like I'm stuck with you until it's time to hop to the next body."

Bethany's would be slowly absorbed by Nathan to strengthen his newly bonded soul tethers. But just before she'd lose her train of thought forever, she learned that Nathan was a practitioner of the dark arts. He frequently used magic to hop from body to body just before his natural death. Nearing death meant his soul would be at its loosest. Hopping to a new body so soon risked shattering his soul. And now that he was in Bethany's body, there was no way he was going to go back.
