Hi my friends and supporters and greetings from a cold Reykjavik! I’ve been here delivering a keynote speech about flight safety and that’s why you haven’t heard from me this week.

It’s time for another Mentour Super-Weekend and this time we will switch things around a bit. We will be releasing the Mentour NOW video tomorrow and the Mentour Pilot video on Sunday due to some production delays.

So here comes your preview of tomorrows MN release, I would love to hear what you think!

Have a lovely weekend! /Petter

Well, the short answer is that aviation and tyres use units of measurement that look inexcusably complicated. But… why? Today we’re going to look at how we got into this mess and see how it COULD change in the future. And why it might NOT. You might over-complicate the definition of "nautical mile," which is simply one minute of arc on any great circle. All meridians of longitude are great circles, but only the equator qualifies, and that overlooks the fact that the diameter of planet Earth is slightly larger at its equator (like Petter) than elsewhere. Why do we care about great circles? Easy: They show the shortest distance between any two points. Great video!

Greetings from England/UK and the place of origin of so-called Imperial (as in the British Empire) units. We have, of course, officially converted (albeit with some resistance) to metric in this country during my lifetime of 79 years - except on the roads. I'm sure you and other visitors are acutely aware that, in addition to us resolutely continuing to drive on the left, we have insisted that our road signs still show miles (5,280ft) and yards, and these are likely to persist long after I'm gone. However, our national Ordnance Survey (ordnance = gunnery) mapping system has been metric for many, many years. The grid squares on OS maps are kilometres and the heights are in metres. From previous conversations, you may recall that I had a career lifetime in the design of jet engines, hence my subscription to your channel. I began on a drawing board, measuring in inches and thousandths ('thous'), then found myself having to deal with dual dimensioning on the RB211. Collaborative projects (eg, the Adour and the RB199) meant going metric - except for the fasteners, where AS range nuts, bolts, etc, with inch thread dimensions, were the norm. And I still don't understand engine thrust in kilonewtons (kN): I still think in terms of lb thrust. But having taken up sailing in retirement, I'm now very familiar with nautical miles and knots - and when you sail into a French port you are likely to see a speed limit sign in 'noeuds'.
