The AWESOME story of the Space-Shuttle Queen!

How much do you know about the NASA 747s that were used to carry the Space Shuttle? For example, did you know that their name, “Shuttle Carrier Aircraft” or SCA, isn’t really an accurate or a complete description of what they were for? The original SCA was tail number 905. I forget the tail number of the second, but if I recall it was bought at the behest of Congress in the wake of the Challenger disaster. We added a lot of contingency abort sites and many of those would not be able to handle an orbiter full of hazmat (hazardous materials) so the need to get teams in there and the orbiter removed was increased. Thus the need for redundancy in SCA. 905 did most of the flying and certainly was the one to move the orbiters to their final destinations. I was in DC watching 905 ferry Discovery to Dulles for its delivery to the Smithsonian. They did 4 passes around the National Mall. It was March and the wind was absolutely whipping that day. Can you imagine a crosswind component in a 747 with essentially a 737 on its back? I was impressed.
