Can you KEEP Aircraft parts that falls on your house?! YOUR questions on UAL 328 answered.

The engine of United Airlines flight 328 exploded in mid air as the Boeing 777 was climbing through 12500 feet. This incident has been dissected in detail by several, great, youtube channels so I decided to do something slightly different. In this video I have selected 8 of the different questions which have been sent in to me by YOU on both Twitter, Facebook and Youtube. I hope you will like the result! Now! The fact is that an engine can separate from the wing. Several things are designed to allow the heavy generator power feeder wiring to be severed, fuel and hydraulic lines have fuses to cut off fluid flow, and the attachment systems are designed to direct the now separated engine away from the wing. I was there for the design.

Whilst agreeing that P&W vs Boeing is pretty much a clear cut here, I do think that it's worthwhile bearing in mind that across the industry focus is being brought to bear on the difference between a uncontained failure (these days very rare due to certification requirements) and a contained failure with subsequent cowling loss (currently not a certification test item, and seemingly becoming more common with today's ever wider engines). Comparing SW1380 vs VI4066 does illustrate the different energies involved. Boeing is reportedly engaged in a possible re-design of the engine cowling to better survive one of these "contained, blade escape" scenarios, but it's going to be a while before we see any conclusion from that effort. In the meanwhile, the word "contained" will probably remain industry-code that seems somewhat non-sensical to the lay person on the street that experiences the debris.
