This time, turning a bit of titanium!

This is very much just a practice video- a single, simple project I could record and edit, basically just for the practice of... recording and editing. :D It's literally the first time I've ever tried piecing together more than like two or three clips.

It ain't great, but it already taught me a lot- I need better lighting, I need better tripods and camera mounting, I need to work on sound control, editing and pacing, etc. etc.

I'll never be a Clickspring or This Old Tony, but I think I'll at least be able to make a decent, watchable product.

Let me know what you think. Suggestions and ideas also welcomed.

Doc.

Shop Bit #1: Turning a Titanium Autococker Bolt Pin

Quick test video, mainly done to have something to practice editing. Simple project, just turning a 5/16" titanium bolt into a pull-pin for one of my Autocockers. Complete with terrible audio, shaky camera tripods, bad machine practices, and a couple lame attempts at visual gags. But, as the guy about to get dumped on the cart says, I'm getting better. :)

It’s amazing how you are able to take some standard stock part and make it beautiful. I’ve gotten lost on this guy’s YouTube channel, some of the stuff he makes is insane, and he’s totally addicted to his lathes and CnC machines I hope you enjoy it. https://youtube.com/channel/UCIa8y0yR-ABojLCpxX8BgDA.

Nice! My only suggestions are narrating the steps - what you're doing. The result made sense when you showed the before & after at the end, and what the bolt pin was for. Until then, I was just along for the ride. A cool ride!

It's like paintball click spring!

Kind of a thrill to see one of my Titanium bolts getting an actual application! Those suckers have been sitting in a drawer for, um, decades...

very watchable, but only watchable, I can't do anything else since it's totally visual. I think the visual gags work but I want voiceover. I want you to talk about not needing coolant, what it takes to work titanium, what lessons you learned, what that crazy collet is with a hex head?! I didn't know they even MADE those.

deefdragon

technically a style thing, but I am also one for narration myself.

So there's some truth about Doc consumption of mountain dew :)

Hey, consider yourself lucky you got readable handwriting. :) This is literally only my second-ever video that actually has any kind of real editing in it, and even then I kind of had to brute-force my way around it. :) Audio and captions and all that sort of fun stuff comes later.

Nice lathe! But why titanium instead of HS steel?

I watched the video, a mere 15 minutes after it had been posted last night. Absolutely great video Doc. The way the scenes were set up, to start, it _felt_ like a TWB strip.

What? The *part* is titanium, the *cutting tools* are carbide and HSS. Why a titanium pin? Well, in the older days, top speed- that is, the fastest rate of fire (ROF)- was king. Reducing the reciprocating weight of the cocking assembly to make it fast as possible was the "hot trick". Plastic pins tended to wear out relatively rapidly, and stainless steel pins were considered "too heavy". Aluminum worked just fine, though, but just for the sake of the exoticness of it, several people have tried titanium. And in this case, I had the bolts with no other real use or need of them, and I needed a small, simple project to try filming and editing. TL;DR version: 'cause I could. :)

Damn, man! That was absolutely awesome. Unlike others, I prefer to have the vid without narration. It's cool to just see what is being done and infer based on context. Looking forward to the next video!

You need to separate your male and female locking pliers, they are over-breeding their environment.

I liked the subtle (sort-of) humor of "missing that one fitting size" and "in-character Mtn Dew bottles laying around".

It makes me so happy to see you mention Clickspring and ToT. I watch their stuff all the time. I'm impressed how easily you handled that titanium. I understand that it can be a real pain to machine because of how quickly it work hardens.
