Patreon has a couple of posts about the new fee structure, here and here.

It's worth a read, but to distill it down a but, basically Patreon is trying to revise their payment schedule to be more convenient (and more predictable) for the donor, as well as make it more consistent and predictable for the artist.

While the amount you, the donor, will pay will go up very slightly, the amount I get as the artist also goes up a bit more- in effect, less is 'wasted' to variable credit-card transaction fees. (Which can vary from 2% to 10%.)

The new setup will make it much more consistent and predictable for the artist- they're shooting for a fixed, consistent 95% payout each time, every time.

I agree they didn't do a very good job of rolling it out- I still have not received any official notice of the change- but I'm fairly sure they are honestly trying to make for a better system and experience for both the artists and their donors.

I'll understand, of course, if you still want to bail. I appreciate the support you were able to provide for however long you were here, and I hope you'll continue to enjoy the comic regardless. :)

My problem with the change is now every pledge incurs a separate transaction fee. The current process has a single transaction fee for the entire month that covers all my pledges. So if I support 10 people, then I will pay the transaction fee 10 times starting December 18th. So the cost increase on the people making pledges is much higher than just the slight increase to the donation percentage.

What bothers me about this isn't the change, although Wayne has a point about separate fees for each person I'm supporting. However, the biggest infraction they committed can be summed up in three words: THEY DIDN'T **ASK**! They made it very plain that they consider MY wallet to be THEIR property. I'm looking around for a competitor with a better attitude. If necessary, I'll send checks before I'll put up with this high-handedness.

I appreciate the attempt at transparency personally, but the urgent change without warning or discussion leads me to believe that there's something in between the lines of their "explanation" that I'd love to know about. Is there a class action lawsuit happening somewhere off-stage? Are credit card brands and/or processors about to make a major change to fee structures in 2018? Inquiring minds want to know. . .

It does simplify things for the creator. It royally screws the patron. All fees are per pledge. So it adds a $0.35 x # of pledges. Since everything is charged in aggregate it's just extra money for Patreon. They make one charge so why the per-pledge thing if they are just trying to recoup the Credit Card fees?

Accidentally posted before I finished. It's going to hurt the people who have a lot of low dollar pledges going to many creators the most. Not to mention the need to do some sort of calculation before I know what a certain pledge amount really means. It just seems like Patreon is trying to have their cake and eat it too while increasing the costs of the patrons and trying to hide behind helping creators.

Sounds to me like they WANT to kill off lots of small contributions and focus on the large contributions. Good for Patreon but BAD for the artists! Sadly, I am likely to be one of the contributors they kill off. :( Sorry Doc, I really love being able to support you!

Clarifying something I said above: Current structure - I get charged once at the start of the month for all of my pledges for that month. New structure - I get changed separately for every pledge I am making, each with new fee attached to it. So if I support 10 people each month, before it was one change, now it will be 10 separate charges. And if an artist releases multiple paid items per month, you get changed immediately when each paid item is released (instead of it all being paid for once per month under a single fee).

The other thing is their "you get 95%" is kind of a lie. They're comparing apples to oranges to try and get creators on board. You get 95% of the pledge amount, but not 95% of what the patron pays. You're now actually getting 68% of what the Patron pays for a $1 pledge, and 79% of what a Patron pays for a $2 pledge. This is not much different from the percentages you were getting before. (57% of the $1, 74% of the $2...) This isn't counting patrons who donate to multiple campaigns. If someone donates $1 to 100 separate accounts, on the new system you get 68% of what they paid for your part of the pledge, while under the old system you would have gotten 92%.

I may drop Patreon entirely and go to Kofi. One of the people I support uses it, they claim that it is a fee-free service and drops the money directly into PayPal.

Go up "very slightly" only for large donors. I was giving a buck a month to about 25 people. My bill would have gone up about 38%. I'm really sorry but I'm out. Let us know if you find another donation avenue that charges < 40% fees. That's robbery straight up.

Matthew Kaseman

Yeah, my bill would be skyrocketing like a mother as well. Sorry, but I'm a starting college student these days and I'm unwilling to dump a bunch of dollars in VC pockets. Once the new books drop, I'll buy the complete set if I can.

Bob Savery

My total change across all I support is about $2. A cup a coffee. Not going anywhere.

Since a certain author of a strip full of content most questionable has been... excessively vocal on the matter of the Patreon issue, I pulled the plug on him. Doc, enjoy your extra $2 a month.

I just use paypal. Much easier
