Just a lick Demo (Patreon)

Here is a new PSD for the "just a lick" picture ^^

So a while ago one of you guys asked me about lighting :3 I though this picture was a good occasion to talk about it because it features a lot of light and in different ways. You have some direct lighting, indirect lighting, counter reflects and ambient light. I put all lighting layers as yellow so you can see them ^^ 

A cool tips to handle lighting in drawing in general is to treat it almost as a liquid. You identify the sources of the light and then you imagine the light as a liquid flowing from there and splashing around. Some parts of the scene are going to be hit directly by that "water", creating direct, sharp and intense lighting, some of them are going to be only splashed by it,, meaning the light has bounced from another element first and is a lot less intense. It often lead to colored lighting. In case of a forest scene, that indirect lighting tend to be green or blue-ish as the light bounce from the surrounding vegetation. 

And when speaking of light you have also to speak of shadows. A shadow is a darker color but that can be either cold or warm. As a general rule, when an object is hit by warm light  ( sun, fire, candle etc ) its shadow is going to be cold and more blue-ish or purple-ish in tone . For instance its the case in this picture ^^  

On the opposite, when an object is hit by a  cold lighting ( early morning light, stormy sky, blueish magic light etc ) its shadows are going to be warmer.  So darker but looking more orange-ish or reddish in tone. It's a very handy rule to remember when you color or paint. And even if you're not an artist, just try to keep it in mind when you look at game concept art for example, I guarantee you 9 time out of 10 you will see it applied XD
