There are two important changes coming up to Patreon.

As you know, up until now I have been using a system of billing at the first of each month and have kept it ever since, as I feel it's an open model that allow people to not immediately engage themselves when they subscribe to my page and see first if they enjoy my work. A sort of sampling if you like.

Well with their partnership with Apple , Patreon will be required to remove that system entirely and adopt an universal subscription billing instead, where a subscriber pay as soon as they subscribe and are then charged onward at that same day next month.

I just received a mail explaining to me that every Patreon account will be automatically switched to subscription billing starting next November.

I'm not super thrilled with that change to be honest ^^; While it's not going to change anything for any current subscriber ( you are just going to be charged at the 1 of each month like before ), I preferred the previous more open system that worked just fine.

The second change is the one currently in the process of setting twitter on fire... a 30% fee applied by apple if you purchase a subscription through the IOS app..... 30%, just like that.

Now, from what I'm understanding of the situation it won't affect at all patrons already subscribed and only apply to new ones who purchases the subscription through the IOS app. I'm honestly not sure it will stands ^^; The numbers are a liiiitle bit crazy and the backlash promise to be pretty massive...

I guess we will see. The most important new of the two is the end of the first of each month billing starting November. I'll make sure to publish a reminder before the switch is made. .

Personally, the timing of the subscription I think is fine. If you, subscribed on the 30th of a month, for example, I think you were charged twice in two days for the past and starting month. The 30% fee, however, is a problem that will probably stay. The same problem exists for subscriptions on Twitch streams. If you subscribe via the iOS app on Twitch you are charged more than you would usually be charged when you subscribe on PC or Android. And this has been a thing for quite a while now. So I would probably advise to maybe put a disclaimer in the description of the plans to not subscribe on iOS but to rather subscribe on PC or any other system. That is, sadly, the only suitable prevention technique I would see right now.

And this is why I refuse to buy apple products.

30% is crazy >.> I'm glad I don't have any apple stuff

I have more reasons than just this, this definitely adds to the list, though.

Have you looked into subscribestar as a backup to patreon? The NSFW noose is always tightening...

I wonder what happens if you subscribe on web browser but use the apple store app. That should circumvent the 30% cut right? But anyways, the greed is incredible. Corporates are killing everything we loved. Deviantart, Twitter, Patreon... nothing is safe really except smaller sites and forums.

Just do what you can to get subscribers to subscribe from a browser and not the Patreon app. The 30% cut only applies to subscriptions running through Apple. With that said its actually on Patreon to configure the ability to subscribe without it being through Apple and not Apple as they have already been forced to allow apps to offer the subscription direct within the apps themself.

Well when this happens I might not be able to support you anymore again because I was shocked when PayPal worked with this already. =/ I somehow doubt it will with Apple coming in making changes.

I would think so yeah. From what I understand it only in the IOS store.

Oh yeah, my subscribestar is going pretty well ^^ it's a very solid alternative.
