“The First”

For nearly three decades, Porsche defined itself as the maker of rear-engined, air-cooled, lightweight sports cars. From the earliest days of the four-cylinder 356 to the six-cylinder 911, everyone knew what made a Porsche a Porsche. In the 1970s, Porsche and Volkswagen had collaborated on a several models, but the arrival of the 928--a V-8-powered, front-engined GT--as the new flagship shook the faithful to their core. Designed to replace the iconic 911, the forward-engined (and thinking) 928 failed miserably – but it did become the greatest GTs in the world during its heyday. Panamera, Cayenne, Macan - all this became possible thanks to the introduction of the 928.
