I think it depends on what you're going for. If more mystery, go with the older, if a stand alone, then the newer

Maybe fade the aura a bit as it gets farther from the source. It distracts some from the subject. Specifically that one that comes toward the viewer.

I think if you're going for maximal contrast, the 1st one is fine if you're zoomed in just to her lit up portions.
