On the phone that evening, Dr. Camden confirmed his worst fears.

“What do you mean pregnant!?” Zach protested. “I haven’t even been—”

“You know it’s entirely random,” Camden interrupted. “We still don’t know what the cause is with men. But you’re young, and healthy. Many would consider this a blessing. It’s not every day that a man finds himself pregnant with quintuplets.”

“Quintuplets?” said Zach, feeling as though he would pass out. He looked down at his rounded belly. He had suspected he was pregnant for weeks, but had been in denial. But quints? This would disrupt his life completely. “I don’t have time for this. I have a conference in Dubai coming up, and a meeting with the British mini—”

“I’m afraid there’s nothing we can do,” Camden interrupted in a perfunctory way. “Abortion is still illegal for men. It’s too dangerous.”

Zach hung up the phone, trying not to hyperventilate. He could work with this. He just had to figure out a way to twist it to his advantage.

A few weeks later, Zach sat down for an interview.

“Senator, could you confirm or deny the rumors that you’re pregnant?” said the reporter in a playful way, wiggling his eyebrows, as it was already fairly obvious.

Zach did his best to maintain a pleasant expression. There was no hiding this, no point in beating around the bush. “It happened spontaneously. Truly a blessing,” he said, forcing a smile. He laid his hand on his swollen belly. He was only three months along but looked six. “Quints.”

Zach had never wanted children, but now he would be stuck with five of them. Since he was a public figure, it wasn’t as though he could quietly put them up for adoption. He would have to raise them.

The reporter’s jaw dropped. “Five,” he said, looking nervous, like he was worried Zach might be contagious. “Multiples in men is quite the rarity.”

“I couldn’t be happier,” Zach lied.

“I imagine you’ll be taking leave soon.” The reporter gestured to Zach’s swollen belly.

“Oh no,” Zach responded. “I work forward to continuing to work throughout my pregnancy. In fact, I’d like to briefly talk about the recent legislation…”

A few months later, Zach waddled towards his hotel, flanked by his security detail. That didn’t stop the reporters from calling out intrusive questions, or cameramen from getting flashes of him. Zach made sure to fix his face with a smile as he made his way into the hotel.

As soon as he was in his hotel room, Zach’s smile fell. He was wearing a designer custom-made turtleneck, his belly bulging entirely out of his loose blazer. He slid the blazer off, and panted, and rested his hand on his belly. He could see the sweat stains forming in his clothes. He pulled his top off and unbuttoned his pants.

His undershirt was next, then the padded maternity bra. His nipples immediately began to drip. He stared down at the flushed, heated breasts he had developed, his efforts to hide them nearly futile by then. They were E-cups, and just getting bigger.

“Your body is preparing to feed the children,” Dr. Camden had said, pleased that he was lactating.

“I’m only six months along!” Zach had said in protest. “This is unreasonable.”

Camden had merely given him a shrug.

Zach hated how his face had gotten fuller, cheeks puffy and round. He resented how his ass had plumped up behind him, stretching the seats of his pants. He was a daily joke to the tabloids. His belly was gargantuan, the size of a beach ball, and only swelling.

Zach pulled on a tent-like T-shirt, that still managed to stretch tightly against his body. He waddled awkwardly to his desk, the babies squirming unpleasantly inside him. He felt like he was going to burst and eased himself down slowly—sideways—as it was his only hope of reaching the proposal he was working on. And then he cursed quietly under his breath, and got to work.
