So what? Timelapse [ Lineart & Color ] (Patreon)
Content
A rare lineart & color process timelapse! This one's even 90% completed in the video, other than the start of the sketch (which happened in a separate file) and a few minor adjustments in Photoshop towards the end.
There is an interesting point from minute 13:00 in which you can see I realise how much the face had changed from the original sketch, and with it, the vibe of the piece had totally shifted. At this point I do something that's taken me a LONG time to wrap my head around: I ditch the face I'd been working on all this time and start over.
I do this because I realise how important that expression is to the spec of the commission. The client asked for a very specific mood and the face that I had drawn just wasn't conveying that anymore - it had shifted slightly to the side and was more alluring than sassy. As much as they might seem similar enough, it didn't cut it.
From that point, I get stuck in a redrawing loop because after working on the one face for hours it's really hard for me to switch gears and change it up.
At the 14:00 mark there's a sudden leap where the image changes (lines are now red). This is because I moved the image over to Photoshop to address the blurriness that I had caused on the top half of the body by shifting the face and hair so much. (Unfortunately Procreate is not yet as good at Photoshop as preserving pixels through transformation).
After this I get straight down to coloring the image in a simple color style (or cell shading-ish). Towards the end of the video you can see I fiddle with background ideas - from a strip of color, to a completely dark setup. After some fiddling, I decide that simple is better and less distrating for this particular piece, so I stick to a soft bottom gradient and a light shadow under the feet- which overall I thinks works so much better to make the character, her pose and expression shine. More is not always better!
I hope this was useful/interesting. Do let me know your thoughts or any questions in the comments! Always love hearing from you guys. =]
