Another interesting turn for season 12 as we head to a hunters' wake - leading to a unique, partial-bottle episode featuring Sheriff Jody & a colorful cast of new characters... Not too shabby!

Meileen

I know a lot of fans get very frustrated with Mary. The one thing, I think, is helpful to remember is that she is currently younger than her sons. Unfortunately, because of the choice to cast Sam Smith rather than a new younger actress. I think that context can get lost. Also, I know that she is a mother, but that's not her identity. And that's part of the story here. Dean can only see her as his mother...not her own person. He only sees her in relation to himself. This is something children do, but most grow up to understand that their parents are complex imperfect individuals. Neither Dean or Sam got that chance. Conversely, Mary likely had only just started to recognize Dean (at the age of 4) as his own individual with his own personality. And she likely never felt those things about Sam. So, instead of slowly over time understanding each other as individuals, they have all been thrust into being immediately confronted with it. I love writing choices to have us see both Mary and Dean's internal struggles here through other characters. Dean with Jody giving voice to his fears around the situation. And Asa's mom confronting Mary, holding a mirror to all things she is saying to herself about her boys. All the guilt she feels. She is very much stuck in that, and she is choosing distance because she feels incapable of facing them. I think a lot of fans don't like Mary, because we have been with the boys for 11 seasons now. So, we are very used to their POV and being on their side. Anyone who is hurting them is seen as an antagonist.
