Doc Who 10x5 Watchalong

Wow, what a cool surprise! Thank you! I was so excited when I saw this I just kinda dropped everything to do the watch-along. This is one of the episodes from s10 I was most excited to revisit and I'm glad it held up. If anything, it feels more relevant than ever. Political commentary is not that uncommon in Doctor Who but it tends to be done a little clumsily and imo this is the sharpest the show's been in that regard (as far as the revival goes, which is all I can speak to). As for the thing about the TV ratings, you used to hear fans complain a lot about what a shitty job the BBC was doing with marketing at this point. And, yeah, while you had viewers quit with the Tennant-Smith switch, Smith was able to attract new viewers since the whole show got a soft reboot and, in addition to being a great actor, he checks all the boxes for 'marketable qualities.' With Capaldi you had a new generation of Who fans used to the role being played by actors whose age averaged like 30-something, no soft reboot to pick up new fans, an ambitious, darker tone with a slower pace, and yet the BBC was apparently taking it for granted that people would stick around (maybe bc the 50th anniversary hype went to their heads idk). It feels to me like the era got a lot more popular after it ended. New fans excited for a female doctor...old fans bitter about a female doctor...lots of people went back and gave this era a chance and all of a sudden it felt like Twelve's fanbase could rival any nuwho doctor other than Ten.

I think you nailed why Bill is the companion she’s logical and relatable. After having so many companions that were special in some way I think they decided to have one that was…normal

This episode is fantastic. Jamie Mathieson not returning for Chibnall's era, I always thought, was a mistake. He's easily one of the best writers in the show!
