This comment probably won’t matter as I’m only just watching this but here’s me desperately wanting to reach through the screen to tell you seeing as how confused you all were lol The first 11th Doctor we see is 1100+ years old.. this is indeed a Doctor 200 years older than the last Doctor that Amy saw … indicating he’s been through some shit since the last time Amy (and therefore us as viewers) have seen him He died … then the person who got the envelope 1 was himself.. the Doctor .. this is pretty much the Doctor we saw in the Christmas special … this is the Doctor who Amy last saw who was 908 and is now 909 .. so it indicates that in 200 years of the Doctors life he is killed and knows he will be so gathers his most trusted companions As for River .. when she and the first 1100 year old Doctor meet they “sync their diaries”.. it’s strongly implied this Doctor knows River at least as well as if not more than she knows him. Whereas the younger self still isn’t sure.. his only encounters have been what we have seen (however there are a few audio book stories with some off screen adventures) so THIS version doesn’t fully trust River , not like his older self does, so he looks to Amy as he trusts her more as the 909 year old Doctor is indicated to know as much about River as we do I think you guys just got a little too confused at his “who are you?” Question to River… where that was him basically saying to River that he doesn’t know her enough to trust her when she tells him to do something and not say why Sorry for the long and I’m sure pointless comment but 🤷🏻‍♂️ love the reaction anyway

The doctor himself 10th and 11th you see in this episode do not know who river is, yes he knows her but he doesn't know who she actually is to him that's the mystery, that's something we as the audience are yet to find out. To clear up the age situation time lords age very slowly in each of their regenerations, he was 907 in season 5 and 909 in this episode, the future version was 1107 so he was from the future. The younger version of the doctor is from just after the Christmas special so age wise it all lines up, he wasn't David Tennant or Eccleston for that long he's been Matt Smith (that body) for centuries at this point, just tried to clear up any confusion thanks guys great reaction!

You're massively overthinking it. The Doctor wasn't plucked out of one of the previous seasons. He's the same Doctor we had in the Christmas Special. Amy specifically says here that he was 908 when they last met, now he's 909. And the Doctor that died was over 1100. So many years in the future. The Doctor doesn't really know who River is though. We don't either. And that's what he's talking about. He can't trust her because he doesn't really know anything about her. They met only couple of times.

The Doctor who dies at the start of the episode is from 200 years in the future. The Doctor that we spend the rest of the episode with is the present Doctor, right after Christmas Carol.

Also John, longitude and latitude are described in degrees, minutes and seconds, not feet and inches ;)

Alright boys, I'm gonna attempt to clear up the confusion. The Doctor we spend the most time with in this episode was plucked from not long after season 5, the same as Amy and Rory. The timeline for these characters is shortly after The Big Bang. The Doctor we spend time with in the beginning of the episode is from the future, 200 years older than our present Doctor. This Doctor has already experienced the events that take place in this episode. So look at it as we are spending the whole episode with Present Doctor. The reason he asks River "Who are you?" is because The Doctor has never found out who she truly is and therefore doesn't completely trust her in the episode. He may know more about her over time since he met her in The Library, but he still doesn't know everything about her. It's insinuated that The Doctor will one day know everything about her because that's when River first meets The Doctor. But that hasn't happened yet for The Doctor.

The Lazy Gamer

It was more of The Doctor just asking her why she's so significant to his life. What has she done, like asking who she killed. Who is she in the grand scheme of things, and most importantly, who she is to him. He knows that one day he trusts her enough to tell her his name, but he doesn't understand why.

Greg has somehow managed to over complicate an already complicated episode due to one line of dialogue lol. The Doctor who we meet in the diner, after the future Doctor is killed, is the Doctor after we last saw him in the Christmas Carol. He has been on all the adventures we’ve seen him on so far, and has all the experience with Amy, Rory, and River that we’ve seen on screen. This season is very wibbly wobbly timey whimey but Greg is getting himself way to confused 😂

Wow, John. That's all I have to say.

Definitely one of my favourite season openers. Any episode with River in it is automatically one of my favourites, but I absolutely loved the little scene with Rory where she says her greatest fear is the day when the Doctor will not recognize her at all (which we already saw, and we now understand her heartbreak there). The slow opening works well when you think of it as part of two parter, as when 'our' Doctor makes his entrance, it starts to go at breakneck speed so it balances out better. Everyone else has already commented to explain it, but Greg, you have got yourself totally confused. I thought it was explained clearly so I was surprised you had such a problem with it. The Doctor wasn't being dismissive. He was angry with them for refusing to tell him something that they all knew and he didn't when it was clearly something so important. Only Amy's sweet callback to their first meeting made him decide to go along with it. We haven't had a Doctor "death" before. When he dies, he regenerates. The "death" at the end of last Season was a fake-out by the Doctor. This time, River confirms the death and they burn his corpse. That's new. (sorry, this turned into quite a long comment!)

Other folks have explained the timeline, so I'll just mention that the Doctor also asked River "Who are you?" in that cute little scene after Amy & Rory's wedding at the end of last series. He knows as much about her as we do at this point. Then and now, he's asking who she is *to him*. The Doctor from the future in this ep also evidently knew River better - they had far more matching events when they were comparing diaries. And her envelope was marked number 2 (I always thought that was interesting because they theorise that the one he sent himself was #1 because he's the person he trusts the most - if that's true, it says something that River was #2 while Amy & Rory are #3) FWIW, he wasn't being dismissive when he threatened to drop them all off and not go to 1969 - he was pissed off and frustrated that they were all keeping a major secret from him and expecting him to just go along with it. He's suspicious enough of River not to just take her at her word, and he's also genuinely concerned that they might be being coerced. But he trusts Amy completely, which is why fish fingers and custard is what convinces him. I will say that this ep and the next one, while I did love them both from the start, are also episodes that benefit hugely from a rewatch, especially after seeing the rest of the season! Also I LOVE the Doctor and River. I have nothing else to add to that. I just love them. 😍

New to the Patreon, but I will be here for all of Doctor Who, my favorite episodes are yet to come!! Although SPN, AOT, & Avatar are a pleasant bonus :)

just to clear things up the doctor ages really slowly, so he can look the same for a very long time. the doctor we see at the beginning (one that dies) is 1000+ years old, while the one that has the #1 letter is 909. So the doctor from the beginning is the doctor from the future, whereas 909yr old doctor is from after the Christmas episode.

Rea

In the words of River Song, "spoilers, sweetie" 😂😂😂 (just something he said in the discussion part.)

Mack Place

Yeah everyone has explained it really well so far. The Doctor asks River "Who are you?" in just a general overarching sense as opposed to a "Hi nice to meet you complete stranger" kind of way. Having only met a handful of times and one of those her knowing his name has got to make him curious and annoyed she won't tell him anything, so being asked to trust her (knowing she's a murderer) was a bit of a trigger for him.

Mary Coelho

I think y'all were just overthinking his attitude towards all the characters as his younger self lol, Its pretty much just as they tell you in the episode: the doctor is smith's doctor couple hundred years younger, and he asked river 'who are you' because he knows her but doesn't trust her as much as his older self does. But it was hilarious watching y'all be really confused about it tbh

Jack Queen

Me watching: Yeah greg is asking why doesn't the doctor look like david tennant. He's not ready for this episode xD
