To (kinda) explain the master having insane powers, and that not being directly addressed in dialogue. The Master has done some crazy shit in the past. One example being turning into a slimy snake thing and possessing the body of a random paramedic in order to stay alive. It’s goofy, and doesn’t make sense but that’s always been a staple of who I suppose. I can’t say I dislike this episode, but I definitely understand the criticism for it, which lots of people have echoed in the past. I really do think the two of you will enjoy the next episode, it’s certainly far better.

Agreed with the pacing and tonal rollarcoaster. Last 5 minutes are great though. The Timelord reveal was insane, though. Still remember watching it live.

Yup, this episode is REALLY messy. Always be honest about your opinions, guys!

This first part is all over the place. I've never been able to get onboard, even after so many rewatches. The next episode is definitely far better.

I reckon you're probably right that this works a bit better when you know what's coming, because it doesn't all seem *quite* so disjointed. But yeah, there's a SO MUCH stuffed into this. I do like this ep, but I don't think it's as strong as the previous one. The Master's new powers are kinda goofy looking, and that does take me out of it a bit. But I really enjoy John Simm playing this completely unhinged version of him, he seems to be having a blast with it! And the way he plays the relief when he realises the Doctor can hear the drumbeat in his head actually kinda gets me in the feels, just for a sec. That moment of "you thought I was crazy, but I'm NOT". I'm so glad Wilf is in this, Bernard Cribbins steals the show. That coffee shop scene between the two of them is one of my favourite DW scenes 💜 I also like the little moment of redemption for Lucy Saxon at the beginning. And any moment Catherine Tate is onscreen 😆 Looking forward to seeing your reaction to part 2!

Which is why at the beginning of their reactions to the show I suggested fitting the movie in somewhere after season 3 so that they would at least be a little prepared for the goofiness and bat shit insanity that is the Master as a character, like as you mentioned he’s been a slimy ghost cobra that slithers into a paramedics mouth and possesses him and he’s also been a little seaweed skeleton looking motherfucker when he was pretty much at deaths door in Classic who (so pretty similar to how he’s a skeleton monster in this one because he is technically dying throughout) it’s just a case of it’s unfortunate circumstances because there really isn’t a place to give this information over before this episode as it would spoil his return and if you said something about the master being this non killable weirdo with powers like hypnosis etc back in his season three episodes then it would make no sense as it’s not really relevant in those episodes and isn’t really brought up bar the one line that the Doctor says about the master having hypnotic powers but being confused as to how he hypnotised the world. Basically trying to say it’s part of the Zany weirdness that is Doctor Who especially Classic Who and it’s either something that you are on board with or it takes you out of it a bit, I agree with you about understanding the criticisms etc as it’s understandable that it doesn’t work for some people, personally I still like this episode regardless of its flaws because to me it’s positives eg the ending and the scenes with Wilf outweigh the negatives for me.

All I’ll say is you’re going to really love part 2! And as for me, I’m bringing my tissues cause oof! A lot of hard hitting moments and fantastic dialogue! But yeah... I rewatch a lot of episodes at random because I know the seasons well enough to jump in anywhere...I hardly ever rewatch this episode and just skip to pt 2.
