This episode exemplifies the number one problem with the Sera Gamble era: interesting ideas but absolutely no idea of how to execute them well (and no idea of how to make you give a crap).

I don’t hate this episode, but I’ve always been disappointed in some of the things that were brought up or implied that were never followed through. And that applies to this whole season (tbh the show as a whole) as well. First, in regards to Emma, they seemed to focus on her/frame her/dress her in a way that makes her seem different than the other Amazon kiddos (she was reluctant to eat, she showed a bit more pain during the branding, she was the only one not dressed in all black in the branding scene, too). But in the end she was just one of the herd. I think it would’ve been such an interesting concept if she was different/good because she was a hunter’s kid or because she was Dean’s specifically. Secondly, and I think more importantly, in season 3, episode 2, Dean talks to Lisa about realizing that he doesn’t have anything he’ll leave behind when he dies except a car after he shows disappointment about not being Ben’s dad. Now I’m sure that a big part of that was because he KNEW that he was going to die at the end of his year deal, but those feelings don’t just go away. The fact that they had an episode where Dean DID actually father a child (granted in a WAY abnormal situation) that Sam ended up having to kill and that was not in any way explored was a huge misstep, imo. I agree with you that there just wasn’t a lot of time, but I feel like SPN does this a LOT: introduces really interesting themes or plot/character beats that never really get fleshed out or explored. Still...it’s not the worst episode and I, as always, enjoyed your reaction/discussion. I look forward to next week!

Actually, at this point it had been mostly taken over by Singer. Sera was shoved to the side after what was actually really good work with Season 6. She just went over budget. We really have Singer to blame more than Sera.

Yeah, Sera was on the outs by this point. IMO, Singer is responsible for a lot of the bad execution of plotlines in the later seasons. He was always more drawn to the MOTW storyline and not as much the overall storyarc, because he liked everything to be cut and dry and complete by the end of each episode. This, at times, subdued the emotional impact of the story. I think, in general, dealing with emotional scenes isn't his strong suit.

The actress that played Emma was also in Season One. She played the little girl, "Missy" in 1x15.
