Not fond of this one. This is before The Xmas specials started getting good.

Possible fact that I didn’t include because I’m only just picking up on it now but the whole “I hope I didn’t just trip on a brick and hit my head” line from Tennant could be a tounge in cheek reference to the fact that the 6th Doctor effectively fell and hit his head on the Tardis console which caused him to regenerate into the 7th Doctor.

Unpopular opinion: This is definitely my favorite Tennant Christmas special!

Like many others I imagine. I'm following various others at different stages of NuWho. For all those that are at further stages, I'm ALWAYS wondering to myself, what Greg and John will make of this or that, more than any other reactor. And it's because of their capacity to appreciate these kinds of episodes when perhaps others wouldn't. 👍🏻

In canon, Jackson Lake goes on to write a “fantasy novel” called A Man of Two Minds in 1860. In the novel, he details The Doctor and John Smith fighting Cybermen. This way Lake could honor The Doctor and write his autobiography.

The Cybermen have always been a favorite villain of mine in concept, but sadly not often in execution. When the human and horror elements are leaned into they can become a way more chilling sort of monster compared to even the Daleks. Thankfully there are some, admittedly much later, episodes that I think utilize them to that degree and are some of my favorite NuWho episodes. As for the specials, on rewatch I enjoy them more, this one being a simple delight now to me, but at the time of release, I’ll admit these first couple wore on me, similar to a run of just christmas specials in between two series down the line. The wait during those times, with the few episodes releasing often being on the lighter side in terms of major developments could definitely be a bit disappointing, but in hindsight it wasn’t always the episodes themselves. Also to anyone who hasn’t checked out any of the Big Finish audio dramas, one of the best is a truly haunting Cybermen story called Spare Parts. If you’re interested it’s a great place to start, taking place timeline wise during the fifth doctor, and exploring the origins of the original Mondasian Cybermen.

Agreed, this one was fun! Its not a particularly grand or significant episode but I think that's good considering how intense the finale was. And just giving a moment of joy and a bit of healing for the doc at the end. Though its not my favorite Christmas Special (many great ones to come,) I think it does pretty well, as a one off, to give the audience room to breathe.

I still want David Morrissey to become The Doctor one day.

Tbh it’s okay to not be too hyped by the Cybermen as the reason they are such great villains is the idea of them. They represent the fear of what we will become and their potential is rarely done justice in the new who
