All 4 forms of bending originate from martial arts. Waterbending is based off Tai chi, Earthbending is based off Hun gar, Firebending is based off Northern Shaolin, and Airbending is based off Ba Gua. They had an expert Martial Artist named Sifu Kisu who created and choreographed all the bending movements live for the animators to make the fight scenes as good as they are.

I love Toph, one of the best characters in the show

Originally Toph was going to be the Earthbender we see in the opening sequence. However, the writers felt it was strange to have a 30 year old man travel with teenagers. So instead of a muscular grown man, they went the exact opposite, a blind skinny young girl.

There is Avatar The Last Airbender before Toph, and Avatar The Last Airbender after Toph. Also, Toph is the best bender of all.
