I HAD THE SAME EXPERIENCE lol we watched this in my Latin class and compared the show characters to the ones in our textbook and I was the only big Who fan in the class so it was a big crossover moment for me lmao

its been a while since i watched an episode from this season, and i forgot how much i enjoyed donna and the dr's friendship!

Being human uk only got 6 episodes in season 1 could you please just do one episode

It must be because english is not my native language that the romans speaking english didn't bother me, but at the same time I grew up on italian westerns and never questioned the language in those movies.

Karen Gillan was also in this episode as one of the sisters at the temple. She was the one following them in the opening scene when they arrive in Pompeii

I studied Latin in high school, so I totally understand the excitement about the names lmao

Donna starts to shine in these upcoming episodes.

Love this episode. The Doctor/Donna relationship is perhaps my favourite of all the companions. They just bring out the best in each other. I think you're over-thinking the language thing. The TARDIS translates what someone hears into their own language. Donna is English and therefore hears in English. Caecilius etc. are not hearing English, they're hearing Latin. I wonder whether the Doctor is actually speaking English? (And yes, the names hit home for me as well, as I also did Latin) In Classic Who, it was usual to have each story consist of 4 or 5 episodes. Maybe the episodes were shorter - someone else can probably tell you. A bit belated, but Merry Xmas, guys.

Omg John just reminded me of that latin textbook from high school hahaha. I didn't take the class, but my friend did to help with the SATs or something lol.

Donna's plea for the doctor to "just save someone" is so well performed and always makes me cry.

They were shorter, usually about 20 minutes long and as you said they would be serials so it would be multiple episodes for each story which also meant seasons were longer, but when New Who started they decided to change this and move to 45-50 minute episodes and less episodes in a series (mainly because tv and the way people watched it had changed a lot by 2005) this also stopped filler episodes as the story had to be condensed down to fit one episode (unless it’s a two or three parter) which stopped you having 6-8 episodes in a story, half of which really didn’t move the story along much or were just not that necessary. In terms of the Tardis translation mechanism I don’t have anything to add Cos in fairness you’ve explained it rather well already 👌 and agreed Doctor/ Donna are my fav combo in New Who

Karen Gillan (Nebula and Jumanji 1+2) was one of the soothsayers

I took Latin in HS and immediately got such a vivid image in my head of those characters from that textbook when they were mentioned. Completely had the same reaction!
