This will be a long comment, so bear with me lol. I agree that this had good potential but meh execution. I think they put all the pieces in place but didn't quite use them right. I also didn't like the blind thirsty woman trope, but Aang wasn't acting much different from Katara and I don't think he was thirsty. I also thought that it made sense for them (not us) to trust Jet. I'm not saying it was right to not question him, but I can get why they didn't. 1. We as the audience have seen enemies of the fire nation act as the "bad guy" before (like when they wanted to smash Iroh's hands), but (unless I'm forgetting something) I think this is the first time the gaang were confronted with that. I think this is also the first time they came face to face with fire nation civilians that weren't actively trying to capture them or get in their way. 2. Jet saved them from certain capture by the fire nation, which is pretty strong proof for them that he's on their side. That's a very positive first impression. 3. This really wasn't executed well, but the show tried to show Katara empathizing with Jet over their parents. I think they were trying to show that Katara saw herself in Jet, so it makes sense that it didn't occur to her that he would have such different values and goals than she did. I think this is where the show dropped the ball the most in this episode because I think reinforcing that idea with more depth instead of just shallowly saying "remember your mom" (whom the audience doesn't have an emotional connection with). As for Aang, I think he just naturally trusts everyone. I think all of that combined plus what you were saying about Sokka being hard to take seriously sometimes (didn't he keep accusing Aang of being a fire nation spy when they first met?) lay the right groundwork. It just didn't quite get where it needed to after that. Sorry if you're reading this like "yeah that's what I said" 😑 but I kept wanting to chime in while y'all were talking lol.

Totally late, but to put in my two cents, Katara hasn't had a guy around her age to think of romantically her entire life. She grew up with the only close aged male being Sokka. With that total lack of contact, and with her probably rarely even considering love or romance as something of significance, you can see how a 14 year old girl feeling these emotions in a rush as she's confronted with what seems to be a perfect guy might be the ideal usage of such a trope. Even if it is a trope, this is how the trope SHOULD be executed, and it happens in real life with some of the smartest, most independent girls, who just were just never confronted by that. My best friend is an example, someone I consider smarter than me got very easily swayed at 19 years old. I was always mad at Katara, but watching it this time with you guys, all of these points suddenly occurred to me, and I realize I sympathize with her for the first time during this episode. Katara is generally my least favorite of the core group, but this new perspective really elevated her in my opinion, she's just growing up.... well..I guess it could've been slightly better executed if they had more time..
