I think you guys need to remember that these are children and they can’t be expected to make the same decisions or think as rationally as an adult.

thereelrejects

Fair point. Firstly, doesn't make us like the series any less. Still greatly looking forward to next week's episode! I do think, however, with the world these young people inhabit, the life they've grown up in, etc... it's more nuanced than simply comparing it as children not being expected to make the same decisions or think rationally as an adult. We love the qualities of them as children, same time there's elements of them that are expected to be more mature or wise than the average kid that I think the series at this point has well established. And to be totally fair, I think it was the execution of how it was handled where our qualms mainly are. End of the day, it's just our opinion on the parts of the episode that didn't bode well with us. Wouldn't try to convince you otherwise, simply stating where we're coming from lol. But like I said, 10 episodes in, and liking or loving 9/10 isn't bad for us! Usually it takes 5-6 episodes to start really liking a series, and that happened for us early on haha. So we'll for sure be seeing it through till the end

Matthew Cronin

I agree with you, and obviously respect your opinion on the episode. I just don’t want you guys to be screaming “make the right decision! Why aren’t you smarter?” In your heads or out loud lol. And I think sometimes you guys also expect the show to have the complexity and depth of something like GOT when it’s still a 22 minute show on Nick. You kind of have to take it in as the whole story and less as episode to episode. Like You said Katara and Aang didn’t give Sokka more credit at the end for being right and they kind of just laughed it off. Maybe you didn’t get instant gratification but you can see in each episode that they’ve learned and adapted to the lessons from the one before it. It’s just hard to hear complaints I guess when I know that the complaints are resolved soon and it’s like “don’t get so mad just wait a little longer!” I still look forward to you guys watching it every week.

I cant wait for you guys to see 12 & 13 😊😊

Alright, no need to provide me a detailed response just cause mine is about to lengthy lol. I’m just going to give you an in depth one because I generally love chatting with you in comments or messages & I ddo feel the need to explain thoroughly because I respect you, Matt :) Firstly, it’s a Reaction haha - so I'll take your feedback in, however, like all feedback, I gotta assess what I agree with or don’t agree with. I can not tell you that if we're having an emotional response that we're going to hide it because we are reacting at the moment and that's kind of the whole point of the experience. It happens with us with every series we've ever watched, whether it be Supernatural, The Boys, Doctor Who, etc... often times in episodes I'll be upset or frustrated with something then by the end of the episode or season we're like "ah that was actually good." Like for The Boys, we bitched about Maeve many times on multiple episodes and then by the end of the season we were cheering for her. Not sure if you’ve seen the series, that’s just an example lol. I know you're passionate about the series, which I respect undoubtedly - you were & still are one of the main people championing for us to cover the series, just wanted to let you know that we are going to continue to express how we feel in the moment we're feeling it cause that's the point of the reaction. So trust me, I TOTALLY GET how from a viewer who knows where the episode or series is headed, that it's like "don't complain! Just wait." but that kind of goes against the point of an honest emotional reaction whether it's a positive or negative response. Doesn't mean we're closed off to changing our views or opinions as an episode or as a season progresses though. If we’re going with this mindset of “don’t complain or get mad at what’s happening in the episode” then we also shouldn’t say when we love an episode either because we don’t know what’s subject to change. Do you see where I’m coming from? Also, a lot of the time I might really not like an episode then a later episode does something that suddenly makes that episode I didn't like much better... that emotional experience is a part of a journey with a series and in my opinion part of the fun of watching other people become that way. When you love a character then you find by the end you hate them. Or when you hate a character then by the end you love it: when you do take the time to reflect upon it as a whole. Cause yeah, I do agree, that I’ve noticed these characters generally do learn from past experiences (past episodes). We certainly do not go in with the mindset that this series is supposed to be some HBO caliber of story telling, there’s a nickelodeon logo with a kid riding a bicycle before we skip the intro lol. We embrace the fact that it’s a children’s show that supposedly matures as it goes on. The series was also aired weekly, if I’m not mistaken - and even if it wasn’t, if it was a series released on Netflix for one long binge or something like that - as a person who admires the craft of storytelling we like to review each individual episode because while by the end of a season or series you have to look it as a whole, there’s a lot of care & dimension put into each episode too. Otherwise they wouldn’t switch up head writers & director per episode. Being that’s how they aired them, they do have to work on an individual level too, so I don’t believe it’s unfair to address them that way as we progress to get to the end point. Otherwise it’d be just do a reaction and then say “cool. We’ll wait till the end of the series to give our opinion.” Which as by now you know is not our style haha. Bottom line: I appreciate your enthusiasm for the series as well as your support shown here, comments, messages, etc… It’s always a pleasure to engage with you regardless if we’re not seeing eye to eye because you take a respectful approach which I’m always happy to have a discussion about when it’s conducted in that manner. So thank you buddy!

I think you were a little harsh on Katara as she's younger then Sokka & outside of Aang & Haru (which as you pointed out turned out to be good guys) she hasn't really interacted with any boys that aren't from her tribe (which we were shown in episode 2 were soley her brother, young kids & the elderly as the rest of the men had gone off to war) + with Aang acting in a similar way I think it sold me more on Jet's charisma as a leader which is definitely something that could make Katara & Aang view Sokka's behaviour as just him being paranoid & insecure/jealous (which has already been shown to not be out of character for him in other episodes) of Jet for being the leader of a skilled group of freedom fighters despite only being a year older than him (Jet is 16, Sokka is 15). You Guys: it's a kids show, they wouldn't drown an entire village of innoscent people, also The Show: has Aang find out he's the sole survior of the genocide of he's people. But other than that loved the reaction & am looking forward to more. Also congratulations on your engagement.

Naww let the waterbender thirst for a bit, for she must learn the error of the thotty path. But honestly I get what you’re saying, it’s not one of my favourite episodes for that exact reason. That trope always shits me too so I never fully enjoyed this one cause of the constant eye rolling. After many rewatches through reactions I can appreciate it now and I do like Jet but I was considering a skip till I saw the comments 👀 😂.

Anonamai

Btw Episode 11?? It’s the filler of Avatar so I’m putting it out there that you can skip if you want.

Matthew Cronin

I apologize if I argued. I certainly don’t want you to hide your reactions. Keep up the good Work.

thereelrejects

Oh dude! You got nothing to apologize for. You were coming from an honest place and I don’t think you were being, like a dick about it, we were just having an open communication about things. Having a conversation about a disagreement isn’t the same as an argument (at least on my side of the comment thread haha). You’re great man! And appreciate you always commenting or sending things my way to enhance the Patreon or viewership experience. Sincerely mean that lol

Episode 11 is a weird one if you just watched jet. But let them decide if they want to watch it or not. I think it will give them a good conversation about the series. Season 1 gets much better after 11. Episode 12 and 13 are my favorite episodes in season 1 of Avatar the last airbender.

Diana

I get that a lot of people have a slightly more negative opinion on this episode, but with how over the top the going up in the trees scene is played, I think the creators knew they were doing something controversial with the obvious crush that I always find the crush angle really funny. Plus it still has Sokka saving the day, giving his place in the group meaning.

It showed in the second episode that Katara can freeze people, when she accidentally froze Sokka and then froze the fire nation troops on Zuko’s ship. She also did it in the last episode when she froze a puddle to make the pirates slip and fall
