You probably know, but just in case, couldn't find this on the website

I appreciate that you wanted Rose to resolve things but I don't see that as being her arc at all. She's coming to terms with whether this stranger can be the Doctor. And she shows that she's learnt a lot from him, she steps up and literally strings together her knowledge from every episode so far. What did you want Rose to do? Outsmart them?? Fight?! She's still got more progression to come and a whole new dynamic to establish with Tennant

Daryl

After the "Christmas" special I thought Tennant was also going to be a lot of fun for the show. I too wasn't that enthralled until he had fully woken up. As he finds his feet so to speak, in letting us know how he might be different in the role. This introduction gave the episode that kick it needed. From the Lion King quote I was almost completely sold. 🤣 You won't be the last to gripe about Mickey lol. People don't necessarily change over night. It can sometimes feel like a narrative convenience to have characters radically change if the story suits. In reality people will often return to form even after some development. I find that far more believable than have him change after one or two isolated events. Rose and US the viewer may be quite enamoured with the Doctor. With all the mystery and adventure / perilous danger he brings. But to Mickey he is partly still the person that stole his girlfriends affections within the space of a day. I don't begrudge him his brief "I told you so" moment. However petty he might be being. And as for not wanting to be reminded on what he's been missing out on after he'd asked to not be allowed to come. As far as Rose is concerned she was asked to come but Mickey was not welcome at first. I've always liked to cut Mickey a break from the very start. 😁

Darn - I was just about to go to bed. Now I'm going to have to stay up to watch this!

I definitely agree with what Daryl has said, I’d also add that you will come to at least like if not love Mickey this season and Rose will develop more throughout the season so I’d say be patient 👌 also when it comes to Christmas episodes, think of them like Die Hard, they are set at Christmas and there is Christmas related stuff in them but that isn’t the sole focus of the episodes otherwise it would get boring after a while.

Also I can’t tell if it won for season one or two but dr who won 2 BAFTA’s and was nominated for a further 4 in 2006 👍

Also small bit of trivia but David Tennant was almost cast as one of the supporting members in “the unquiet dead” but RTD and Julia Gardner decided to cast him as the Doctor instead as the news had broke about Christopher’s exit around about this time and Russel had already been working with David in Casanova that same year so (as David often says) that basically served as his audition for the role. Russel invited him over for tea (dinner) and showed him the rough cuts of what they had shot so far of season one as he knew David is a massive fan and asked David to take over the role. David was initially worried that he would end up playing the Doctor for less than a minute at the end of the episode as it was entirely possible the bbc wouldn’t renew it, but thankfully they did and he’s up there as one of the fan fav doctors 👍

I can see what you mean about this episode - while a lot of people like it, I have mixed feelings. It has its fun bits, but it only really 'wakes up' when the Doctor does. Then it's full of energy (although I don't like the sword fight - really poorly choreographed by anyone's standards). However, we did get just a glimpse of what David could do as the Doctor, ranging from comedic to a little frightning (his "no second chances" line). He's a fantastic actor and really versatile. Xmas specials should always be watched. I mean, why wouldn't you? It's not like you would skip any other episode in a season. They are often standalone, but not always (e.g. this one was essential viewing to see the beginnig of the new Doctor). Looks like you skipped the Special episode we talked about. Never mind - maybe you can look at it sometime out of interest (not to do a reaction to). I was amused by you thinking Harriet Jones' message should have been the other way around (the one where she says it's a day of peace, and we extend that peace to the Sycorax(sp), but we are armed and don't surrender (I can't quote exactly). All I was thinking was "how very American of you guys"! 😂😂😂😂 Pretty sure Torchwood hadn't started yet, altough I'm not 100%. Looking forward to getting into the Tennant era with you guys. It's going to be a lot of fun!

Toasted Toad

Just checked Wiki and it says that Torchwood started in 2006, so I guess I was wrong above! I can't rememeber it, or at least the early days, but people have been saying you shouldn't watch it yet. Personally, I wouldn't watch it at all - I thought it was very weak (worst was inconsistent characterisation) - but up to you.

no a favorite of mine, but kind of required episode... otherwise season 2 would feel weird, it goes straight to action.

i agree, i appreciated when she tried to negotiate with the sycorax!! shes remembering all the the new aliens and planets and even laws like whatever the shadow proclamation is. she thinks she's alone but she absolutely steps up to the plate! not to mention earlier in the ep when she smartly hides the dr in the tardis, as it is the safest place.

Reggie B

YES i absolutely feel for mickey. hes being a kicked puppy, hes stewing in his sadness a bit, but i totally get it

Reggie B

(not a brit so im not an expert but) i believe the xmas eps are also usually a bit more family friendly (aka more for kids, a bit cheesy) since they get the highest ratings for the show each year. everyone in the country is home w their families, and i know that a ton of casual viewers will tune in for just these eps but not nessecarily watch the full series.

Reggie B

i think this ep is so much fun! ive rewatched it many times. i love seeing the new dr in the previous one's outfit, and i love when they finally get their own signature look. just, every first episode each dr has are very enjoyable for me lol. i also love how sweet rose and the dr are at the end of the ep, holding hands, picking where to go next, its very "second star on the right and straight on til morning" kind of magic feeling ❤❤ i do agree that the best part of this ep is when ten finally makes his big entrance! im so so excited for your guys reaction to the second season, its very close to my heart and i have a lot of fond memories of watching for the first time.

It would have to have been as the episode “cyber woman” is set after the events of doomsday and it would have ran between s2 and season 3 of Doctor who hence why the finales tie together for that season.
