The Akito the Exiled mini-series is a side story with brand new characters that takes place between season one and season two. Yes Lelouch does show up but he is not central to the plot of that story. In my opinion the mini-series is very confusing to understand and you would definitely would need to do research to understand more of the lore of that story if you were planning on watching it.
