This is one of my favourite episodes. Honestly s1 was the best and nothing compares to it tbh

Oh, you bet Simon Pegg was a Doctor Who fan! And I seem to remember him saying that his first line was actually the introduction of Max, and he just couldn't say it! I like that - the "aspirational aspect of the show". That's a really good way of putting it. Gotta remember that one. I think you've caught the spirit of it really well. I thought the role of Adam in the episode was really interesting. Not just the specifics of what he did/didn't do, but also the contrast he cut with Rose. The Doctor's original offer to Rose to travel with him was very quick and looked spur of the moment. But this shows that it wasn't at all random. The Doctor did not want to travel with Adam, but took him as a favour to Rose. I think maybe we're supposed to think that the Doctor is a bit jealous of Rose liking Adam, but I believe the Doctor just saw through him instantly (okay, so maybe he was also a teensy bit jealous). Unlike Rose, Adam's defining characteristic was self-interest. He was looking at how he could use what he saw to get rich. I don't think the Doctor has ever been wrong with his choice of companion. He makes up his mind very quickly, but has a lot of insight. Again, I love Ecclestone's acting. The Doctor is not just furious with Adam, he's disgusted. Not surprised Adam was afraid the Doctor would chuck him out of an airlock!

I never really liked this episode as a whole despite Simon Pegg being in it. Not much about it clicked with me. There are elements I do enjoy after I've now seen it a number of times. I had an instant aversion to the Adam character who I took an undefinable dislike to. Which I imagine was the desired response. But it was something about the actor as well. He was extremely unlikable when he was in an English Soap as well. Good at playing undesirable characters. A career that is now over after his conviction.

Hah!! God, that's a hell of a first line to be delivering on a show you've most-likely loved since you were a child 😂I guess I can't blame him! Either way, super cool to see him pop up here - especially now given the way both he AND the rebooted show have blown up. And thank you much, I appreciate that! Feel free to use whenever :) I like that point a lot re: The Doctor & his companions! Looking back, it does seem like even if he didn't intend to bring her along upon their very first encounter, you can definitely see the quality he must've seen in her arise across these episodes. Seems like the crucial factors for Rose are her general sense of openness & curiosity + her strong sense of human morality. Even if Adam doesn't seem like a "bad guy," he doesn't seem to occupy the same sort of attitude/approach she does. Fascinated, too, by the jealousy angle. Still can't get quite a read. I feel like there is some sort of loving affection there, even if it's not a completely straight forward "I love you, let's get married!" type of romance. I know there's greatness to come with Tenant, Smith, & beyond, but I really, really do love Chris's performances. The amount of layers he's able to either play simultaneously or oscillate between on a dime are just wonderful. And God, you really feel his feelings toward Adam by the end of it haha. Love they way they played that in editing, too, because I was half expecting him to chuck him out the airlock also 😂

Damn, I had no idea!! Especially now after reading up on him a little, I guess I can see why he never clicked with you - probably for good reason! Shame to hear that. I thought he was fine enough in this episode (and the small parts of the last one he turned up in), but not much other than that. Hope we're onto some episodes you're more into soon, though. Seems like one great benefit of this series that, unless it's a two-parter, you can at least assume you'll get a chance of pace next episode...

Oh there are way way way way more loves than erm that was alright kind of episodes for me. Much like the Doctor sees time, I have come to see the show more as a whole. The sum of its parts, characters, actors, ideas, script, and its delivery ect ect ect tip the scale against the odd episode that I'm a tad indifferent to. Needless to say they are all important to get us from A to B. I really like the next one. 🙂
